I'm thinking of moving to Halifax?

My partner and I are thinking of moving to Halifax NS. He is extremely excited as he is originally from there but I have lived in Australia my whole life.
I am worried about getting homesick and missing our laid back Aussie lifestyle.
What is it like in Halifax? Are there many young people (We are in our early 20's) And are there many jobs on offer?
Does anybody else know Australian's living in Halifax?

The weather in Nova Scotia is pretty harsh during winter (November- May). Freezing rain, snow and a terrible north Atlantic wind that can send the temprature from +5 C to -30 C almost instantly (AKA wind chill). Although, the entire country has been hit with bad winters for the last 3 years.
There's 3 universities in Halifax, so there's plenty of 20 somethings in the area. Where they go when they graduate is another matter.

For jobs on offer, there's no real industry here. There's no manufacturing plants, no tech industries and some limited agriculture. There seems to be plenty of call centres, outsourced to us from major American and Canadian companies.

I haven't seen any Australians in Halifax. Comparatively, there's so many Australians in Vancouver I thought backpacking around the westcoast was what all Australians did before they're 35. I believe it's mutual, Vancouver loves Kiwis and Ozzies and they feel the same about Vancouver.

*Noah the Greek has no idea what he's talking about. Halifax is quietly one of the most religious cities I've ever been to. There is ONE strip club outside of the city limits, ONE adult bookstore and ONE adult video store. I've been here 5 years and I have never seen a street walker (prostitute) on even the most shady neighborhoods.
As for Religion, all the good ole boys are here; Baptists, Presbeterian, Catholics, Mormons, Protestants and various other Christian religions I had not heard of until I came here. Each one has nearly half a dozen churches in this small city.
However, Halifax does look quite dirty when it rains. Grass turns to mud, all the street litter forms dams, and the cement disolves from the winter salts, it's not that bad and it's still a lovely city.

I'm shocked at most of the answers here. Half my family and many of my friends live in Halifax, and I've always loved the city. Maritimers are the nicest people on earth, and while it isn't the most sophisticated city, there are plenty of young people (Halifax has the most universities per capita in Canada), and it is really beautiful. Winter is a fact of life in Canada. If you are afraid of the cold or the snow, then don't come here. But I think you should definitely give Halifax a try. The other thing is there is a healthy arts and music community, and even when you're city center you are at most 15 minutes away from the beautiful coast and the beach. Truly one of my most favourite places on earth!

Aliz
I visited there and found it to be a nice city. Great sea scallops and fish. It can get cold in the winter around freezing. I don't know if it is that cold in Aussie land.

Dead Day Afternoon
The people are super nice and friendly but the winters are pretty brutal. If you can handle the cold you'll like it.
Plus, you could try it and if you don't like it move to BC later.
That's where most of the Aussie's are.

benadri
Quite a young city as there are plenty of students and many universities.

Fun place

yes you should definetely move here, lots of friendly people and lots of universities, so lots of young people. Many cultures here as well. There are lots of jobs here, actually generally halifax's unemployment rate is below the national average.

i was born and raised in halifax and have very mixed feelings. i moved away and know that i will never return to start a life there.

GOOD
- 5 universities, so many young people like you
- very liberal city, great music and arts scene
- seafood!
- friendly people. canadians are friendly in general, but the folks from nova scotia are the best.
- pretty downtown area
- on the ocean

BAD
- no jobs (this is a big one, but i can't go into it all here, do research on this.)
- halifax is a penninsula, i recommend living within it because most of the suburns are crap (mostly clayton park) and if you don't have a car...
- HORRIBLE transit system, worst I have ever see
- urban developpment is very pedestrian unfriendly; coupled with a crap transit system, it can be hard to get around
- very cold, icy and windy in the winter
- politicians are all crooked (nova scotia has had a perpetually bad economy because of this, and it ties in with the no jobs point)

if i had to say move or don't move, i would say don't move. my friends and i were talking about this over christmas, they agree, as they've all moved away as well.

I think it's very cold there in the winter. If you want great summers and a fun, laid back lifestyle, try Vancouver BC on the West Coast of Canada.

I have been to Halifax and I can tell you that it is filled with porn shops and strip clubs and adult book stores, and when it rains its like the worst looking citiy in the world. Good Luck, I would stay in aussie land, relocate to SFP
