I'm thinking of taking a road trip to Canada. Can I legally drive up there?

I have a valid American license, American insurance, and a passport. My friends have passports as well. We are planning on visiting my uncle in Ottawa, but can I drive over there legally without a canadian drivers license?

You can legally drive with your USA issued driver's license in any Western country as treaties allow for them to be transferable from jurisdiction to jurisdiction......I would maybe worry more about the insurance aspect. I'm not entirely sure if you American auto insurance will cover you once you leave the USA so you might want to talk to your insurance company to ask and possibly find out if your coverage is in complince with Ontario provincial law (as driving is a provincial concern in Canada and as such varies from province to province). What car are you driving? Do you own it or will it be a rental? A rental car may not be allowed to cross the border but they sometimes offer supplemental insurance to cover your risk for the area in which you travel.

Lots of research is needed to ensure a fun holiday without hassles. Enjoy...I used to live in Ottawa myself and it's a great place to visit with lots to do!!!

Of course

Yes, as long as you don't stay for an extended period of time.

Some places in Europe offer you up to one full year before having to change your native country license.

Everything should be fine. It is very different for Mexico. Canada is very similar to the US, except for Quebec where most everything is in French. Do your friends have American passports or foreign passports? This could make a difference in border crossings. When you get to Ottawa, try the poutine.

Yeah sure go ahead, why not?

Of course.

Just remember that 100 km/h = 55 mph (roughly).
If you're going to cross the Ottawa river into Quebec, first review:
- ARRET
- Prochane Sortie
- Gauche
- Driot

etc.

YES YOU DONT LIVE THERE SO YOU CAN IF YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ALL HAVE AMERICAN PASSPORTS YOU CAN GO OVER BUT UNLESS YOU LIVE IN CANADA YOU DONT NEED A CANADIAN LICENSE
