As a truck driver who has done this run. Book a hotel. Even if you do it as two 10 hour stints you will still be bushed if you are not long distance drivers. To do it in 20 hours you have to swing inland at Charleston SC and take I 26 up to Columbia where you switch to I 77 north. Run this to US 19 in West Virginia and this will take you north to I 79 north into Erie, PA. Take the I 90 east to the I 190 in Buffalo, NY which will take you to the Peace Bridge into Canada. Follow the QEW to Toronto and your sister-in-laws directions from there.
As a truck driver, I can't help you out much with the things to visit but once you get to VA, the scenery starts to get spectacular. Unless your daughter is a real solid sleeper, plan on frequent stops. At Beckley, WV you will want to stop and visit Tamarack, it's a souvenir and crafts demo place with its own access to the interstate and it's just before the US 19 exit. It will look like a regular service area/truck stop until you spot the building up on the hill.
Have a good trip. |

First, I think it is going to take you a lot longer than 20 hours. Driving straight through to Orlando from Manhattan takes at least 24. But anyway, definetely get some good childrens and adult music, of course you should stop in NYC, and philadelphia and probably DC, but all those stops will be big ones. There is a lot more too. Good Luck and have fun! |

I've done the trip from Toronto to my sister's in Ft.Pierce Fla
22 hrs 40 Min's (80 plus all the way)
Don't forget you have to stop for gas and ??? every ?
(how big is your gas tank and your bladder)
I don't recommend it
Unless your going to take 3 or 4 days, there's not much point in side trips
Just stay in a nice hotels on the way
Start early, Stop early
Save your site seeing for T.O. there's lots to do here |

I vote for stopping in Gettysburg and touring the battlefield. The town itself is neat, and if you are into 'haunted' hotels there are a few available. I recommend a full day dedicated to Gettysburg, though. |

Good luck with the trip!
I've always wanted to visit the Edgar Allen Poe museum in Richmond, Virginia.
If you and your husband like baseball, the NC Baseball Museum is open in Wilson, NC, Thursday through Sunday. Very interesting place.
Have fun. I'd break it up into two driving days if it were me. |

On the way into Canada you should spend a couple of hours in Niagara Falls, ON to see what else? The Falls one of greatest wonders in the world. Once here you should go see the following places: The CN Tower (Which you will notice when driving into Toronto), Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), The Eaton Center for Shopping, Yorkville, Castle Loma (Toronto Only Castle), The Rogers Center (If Baseball is still On or a Canadian Football Game). |

If you're going near a national park or neat attraction, stop and take pictures. If you don't want to stop, then drive the whole way but take a short break and sleep some.
Remember to stop at rest parks for the restroom and don't go in alone. Rest parks are cleaner and safer than a gas station. |

I have relatives in Florida and i live in Toronto. We have done the road trip many times. If you have a child, get ready for a 2 and half day road trip from Orlando to Toronto. The best route is I75 North to Detroit, cross over to Windsor Canada then take hwy 401 straight to Toronto. Very simple that way. Remember to take it easy!! It is a long drive and IF it takes longer, don't worry about it. Enjoy the ride. You will be going through the mountains in Tennessee. Just breathtaking views!! Remember to have patience on the road!! As soon as it gets really dark we stopped at an Inn and slept. In the morning we would continue onward. That's why it took us 2 and half days. Safer that way!!
Enjoy!!
PS I my opinion, don't drive 20 hrs non stop with a child in the car |
