Hi. I live in Windsor, Ontario, and cross the Windsor-Detroit border all the time. At present, if you are travelling by LAND (which I assume you are) you need the following documentation: (1) valid government-issued photo ID, such as your driver's licence, and (2) your original birth certificate. Not one or the other, but both. You do not, as yet, need a passport, although having one is the easiest way. This stipulation continues to be delayed (now until at least June, 2009) while the government continues to consider using an enhanced driver's licence.

Technically, American citizens do not need a passport to fly to Canada. IE Canadian customs doesn't require it. But American customs will require it on the way home so if you don't have one, the airline won't let you fly to Canada.

If you are crossing the boarder by land or water, you only need photo ID such as a drivers licence and proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate. This will be changing next summer.

At minimum I believe you'll also need proof of U.S. citizenship like a birth certificate. The rules keep changing.

yes you do need one. I live in Ontario and you will really like it. It's very beautiful. Try and go to the beaches. But yes, you do need a passport if you are coming to Canada from another country

If you are travelling by plane, yes, if not then I don't think so. I never needed a passport when I go south of the border to New York from Toronto by busy or car. Anyways, good luck...and you'll have lots of fun Caribana time. I go every year!
