'Do they speak American?' That's a classic.

If you ever find an American/Canadian dictionary, I would LOVE to buy one.

Ms_4peace
Wow...hope you know where Canada is & dont land up in Combodia...then surely you'll need a dictionary!

Canadians speak English. There is no language called, "American". In the United States, we speak English - however we have our own multiple dialects of English, as they do in Canada.

In Quebec, the language spoken is French. So, if you intend to travel there, get an English to French dictionary.

We speak Mexican so don't worry about it.

haha yes pick up a Canadian / English dictionary @ the local customs office!

kingstonsean
Yes. Only problem is that the American to Canadian pages are all blank, because Americans don't have anything intelligent to say.

The Canadian to American pages translate everything to "F^c* U"

Please be informed that we "Canadians" do speak English so you definitely need a dictionary "American to English" & "English to American" have a nice trip

kotamonster6
we speak english just like you.

ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Both Canada and the United States speak English. In some parts of Canada such as Quebec and New Brunswick French is spoken but English is understood.I love the American/Canadian dictionary idea though.

Wow....now thats a question and a half...An American Canadian Dictionary. Don't they teach anything to Americans regarding other countries or is how to conquer the flavored country of the year? We speak English....if you can read this...you are one step closer. However, the biggest difference is that we do not drawl if you are from the Southern U.S....we do not say y'all...nor do we say riff...we say roof. Also F.Y.I. the early American pioneers and Canadian pioneers (except for the Native Americans which you also have) are and were derived from France and Britian. Your French Speaking Americans are in places like Vermont...our French Canadians are concentrated mostly in Quebec...which not surprisingly borders Vermont. Your Chinatowns like in NYC and San Francisco came from China....surprisingly our Chinese came from China too. You have snow in places like Colorado. We also have snow....just more of it. You live in houses with running tap water and electricity...we also have electricity and running water. Well...let me know if you find the American/Canadian Dictionary...I would love to see it eh!

lol if you had to ask that question....lol i suggest you find one if you don't want to get punched in the face when your here.

kent_shakespear
there actually are Canadian dictionaries, but they are largely spoofing cultural differences. You do not need one.

Don't worry about a dictionary, eh? A phrasebook is fine, eh? Just add eh to everything you say, eh?

And if you have occasion to talk about hockey DON'T call it "Ice hockey". Instead of "with two creams and two sugars" say "double-double." For bonus points, call coloring pencils "pencil crayons". Thanks, eh?

You will definitely need an American/Canadian dictionary, I wouldn't even consider coming into Canada without one! They come in different versions, so make sure you get the English American/Canadian dictionary and not the English one.

Also, you'll NEED to pack:
-Snow shoes
-A toque
-Eh
-Two Siberian Huskys to pull your sled

Enjoy your trip!

Great Question.

I love the phony questions that get Canadians in a tizzy.

It brightens my day.
