As of right now...

If travelling by car/bus/train - you need birth certificate and gov't issued photo id (ie- driver's license)

If travelling by air - you need a passport... no exceptions !

All this will change on Jan 1, 2009. Passports will be required for all modes of travel.

Entry into Canada is solely determined by Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials in accordance with Canadian law, see http://www.cbsa.gc.ca for details. Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada must carry both proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. If U.S. citizen travelers to Canada do not have a passport or approved alternate document such as a NEXUS card, they must show a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport. Children under sixteen need only present proof of U.S. citizenship.
Right from the state department. Follow the link. She is right, the post 9/11 world is not nice anymore.

tuppenybitz
for an american resident to drive over the border you need government issued photo ID and your birth certificate

if flying you need a passport,

this will all change summer 2009 when you will need a passport to enter canada and the US

From the webpage for the Canadian Border Services Agency (section "Arriving in Canada":

"When you enter Canada, a border services officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, when necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you must bring your permanent resident card (i.e. green card) with you. For more information on admissibility into Canada, read the fact sheet called Managing Access to Canada. It is available on our Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca."

You need a passport OR proof of citizenship.

It also explains what you can/cannot bring in (large quantities of alcohol/cigarettes = no, firearms = no, etc.)

ID & birth cert.
After June 1, 2009 you'll need a passport to get back into the US.

Proof of Citizenship:
Birth Certificate and Government issued Photo ID (like a driver's lisence), though if you want to use your passport (but you don't have to), it takes the place of both.

You do not need a passport to drive across the border if you are an american or Canadian citizen.

Melanie B
at this point everyone who is not American needs a passport to come to Canada.

Americans need a passport to fly here but if you are driving you need a drivers license and a birth certificate. Plus anyone under the age of 18 needs a notarized letter from their parents.
