It is at the limit now and will collapse in the near future about the time when the Canada Pension Plan does. Five hour wait in the ER are normal and forget finding a family doctor if you don't have one.

Donna -I luv my Lily-
I know for the fact that it is working and wonderful. I wouldn't be alive if not for our system. I had an ectopic pregnancy four years ago. I went to a medical clinic at 7 pm at night with my complaints by 7:30pm they had done a test, discovered I was pregnant and something was wrong. I don't drive, I bus everywhere. The doctor told me to go the hospital- asked if someone could take me- I said I was taking a bus. The doctor then said no I had to go now. The clinic paid for a taxi and by 9 pm that night I was in a hospital room. I was well looked after, the tests were done in the morning of the next day. By lunch they knew what was wrong and by 1 pm I was getting treatment. Hows that for quick, efficient and kind too. The clinic didn't have to pay for my taxi but Canadians do that sort of thing. Also I just gave birth and my girl was a preemie, I know that we would not been able to get the quality care she got anywhere else, we are just too low income- even though she was two months early she was home healthy in two weeks. You will not get any complaints here. Yes there have been a few cliches but the good in our health care situation out weighs the bad by far

I will post this here as well, as judging from your other answers, you are not well equipped in the brains department, and might not know how to check on other questions.

*ah Erin M, your ridiculous statement proves you know nothing about Canada. No one in their right mind seeks medical help in the states unless they hail from a third world country where health care is even more despicable. In fact, Canada is getting into the Medical Tourism business, as too many Americans try and sponge off our resources. Go ahead and consume your spoon fed propaganda, whatever helps you sleep at night. But when the day comes that you need an ultrasound or MRI and don't have an extra $3000 stuffed into your mattress, don't you dare cross our borders to take services away from our people. Those who have long wait times, are those who show up at the hospital with a common cold instead of hitting the pharmacy. Don't look now, but the ignorance your country is famous for across the globe is showing! My taxes, which amount to around $7000 a year, including school/city and such have changed by around $30 in the last decade. Oops, bet your government didn't want you to know that. I have had all four of my children in a hospital, all via C-section, a myriad of broken limbs set, two major surgeries, countless ultrasounds and MRI's, more cancer screening then I can shake a stick at, as well as various therapies, physical and otherwise for my disabled son. All within due time, depending on need. All at the expense of a few measley tax dollars and our government, who as much as I might rag on them, certainly could never do as bad as Bush. Who am I to demand I be treated in a hospital for something simplistic, over a car accident victim? Or that I receive my ultrasound before someone who could die any time? The longest wait have ever experienced was a week for an ultrasound, as I canceled my first appointment, and two months for a non life threatening Gall Stone removal, as to not interfere with my vacation. In the future, I suggest you keep your mouth shut, as you are making even those Americans who know there is life outside there borders look bad.

*Roxane---->perhaps you should take a look at the other answers she has posted here in this section within half hours time span before you let your arrogance and rudeness shine through.....Yes, I am letting my anger get the best of me in my post, but it is well deserved after reading her ridiculous, un- supported answers and put downs of Canadians. Upon checking her profile I was shocked to find out she is only in the eighth grade.....if this much hate spews from the mouths of babes, then America truly is f**ked. And yes, I do have time to spare at 11pm, my kids are in bed, everything is done, and after I answer a few questions about the country I love, I am off to curl up in bed next to mu hubby. In all actuality, it took less than three minutes to type that out, as that exact question has been asked to death. I am not ashamed that I granted myself an hour to do something I enjoy. You are on this site too, don't forget.

Taxes are about the same as anywhere - definitely cheaper than losing your home because you end up in hospital for 10 days. I assume you're American, correct? Does it REALLY cost at least $16 thousand dollars just to give birth to a baby in the U.S.? I think that money should go to their university education. There's a LOT to be said for universal health care.

tuppenybitz
i think the health system in Canada is great
i have never had to wait to be treated and have received excellent care

Socialised, my dear, the term (albeit similar in actual end meaning) is SocialisED.

I live in an area where there is one hospital which serves a huge area--ambulances zoom in from up to around 70km away. It's northern rural QC, so perfectly acceptable. Several of my friends have had to go to the hospital [alas, only twice for myself, 1) birth and 2) high fever at 6 months, which broke by the time my parents drove into the parking lot], and experiences vary along a very broad line. If they show up in the process of dying, they are attended to incredibly quickly, not even going through triage but being followed by paperwork. My father has a severe shellfish allergy, so when he proceeded to stop breathing at a wedding reception with unmarked clam dip, he was seeing a doctor within 2 minutes of arrival at the emergency entrance, and had a nurse attend him all night--mainly to keep him from falling asleep with only 40% lung capacity left. Another friend broke her leg, and was very upset about having to wait 10 hours on a Saturday night (gotta love those driving accidents), but was in no danger of dying, so...everything got dealt with, and her welfare-dependent single mother wasn't indebted forever, and my friend was fully able to resume her summer job at a kids sport camp (ie, no attack of the 'Tiny Tim's').

Essentially, my taxes, and the taxes my parents pay, have varied little in the past twenty years.

Incidentally, the pension plan is (to be crude) as f---ed as a nun in the view of any capable financial analysis. But I digress.

We all love to complain about it but I for one would not be here if we did not have it. I have had cancer twice - breast cancer 18 years ago and skin cancer that cost me my nose about 3 years ago. That last one was quite an experience. The cancer was heading for my brain and there was no question, it had to go. SO they lopped off my nose and built me a new one from some skin from my forehead. If it were not for our health care system, I would be dead or so in debt that homelessness would seem like a luxury situation.

It's not perfect, but I don't complain.

Taxes in the last 4 years have actually gone down in Canada. Our national tax(GST) has gone from 7% to 5% and our federal personal income tax has gone down by 8 or 9%.

Its OK. The only down about it is you have to wait forever to get an appointment with a specialist.

In Toronto, health care sucks.
My aunt had sharp pains in her abdomen for a couple days and she keeled over, so they took her to the emergency room and she had to wait OVERNIGHT, sleeping on a gurney near the gossiping nurses. They didn't even get to her. After a couple more hours of waiting in the morning, she just left and had to make an appointment with her doctor. Turns out she had a tumor. She's okay but we're still pissed about it.
