Until June 2009,Canadian citizens do not require a passport or visa to enter the United States directly from Canada by land. Canadians can still enter the United States by providing proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate and government issued photo identification (e.g. driver's license).

For travel to the United States by air, it is mandatory to have a valid passport

You need a passport if you are flying. If you are driving you need a government issued photo ID such as your driver's license and your birth certificate for proof of citizenship.

I live on the Windsor/Detroit border and travel to the U.S. frequently, almost weekly. At this point, if you are travelling by LAND, a government issued photo id and birth certificate are required. If you are travelling by AIR, i.e. Toronto to Chicago, you need a passport.
The passport stipulation has been extended, and extended again. Presently, they have extended the deadline for requiring passports for entry by land till the spring/summer of 2009. They are still looking at the feasibility of having enhanced driver's licenses etc. in place of passports.

Go and get a passport. Believe me, it'll be a lot simpler in the short term and long term, too.

get a passport. go online (http://www.ppt.gc.ca/) fill out the stuff...go to the nearest place where you can get one..for my bf it was London...It takes about 20 min if you fill it out on line and go to the place. about 80$ if im not mistaken...took about 2 weeks for him to get it.

Imaka is correct you only need your Passport if you are flying in...

Melissa
You need a passport. Even Americans can't cross the US border without a passport.
