I am an American living in Canada, Why do Canadians always talk about Americans?

Back in the states we never talk about Canadians. Even the news programs in Canada talk about events happening in the States. Once, their whole news program was all about events happening in the States. The funny thing is Canadians like to act like they are on par with us Americans.. what's the deal? My teacher who's Canadian said she wouldn't mind Canada going under American rule, so funny..... I'm in 12th grade getting ready to apply to Universities in the States. My teachers know that so they grade my work subjectively because they are nationalistic and feel I am insulting their educational system since I don't want to go to school here...Anyway, why the hard feelings Canadians? Americans, why do ya think? Are we the best or what?

being the annoying little brother of the word that nobody likes, canada really has nothing to offer....why should AMERICA talk about canada pet beaver, igloos, flannel shirts and horrendous health care system? canada does nothing but copy everything AMERICA does so it makes sense for them to praise us in every way...why do you think when canadians travel abroad they all sew AMERICAN flags to their backpacks?

Americans don't talk as much about Canadians because they are very inward-looking. Canadians learn far more about the US than than Americans learn about Canada, and it has been that way for a long time. I have a cousin who went to school in Maryland. She was the only one in her school that knew anything about Canada because she visited here. And drop the superior attitude about "Canadians like to act like they are on par with us Americans". You are not superior beings, you are tenants of the earth just like the rest of us. Your attitude makes you look like a snot-nosed brat. For the most part, I consider Americans, my friends, neighbours, and family, but I do not accept smarmy superior attitudes from anybody, Canadian, American, or anybody else.

Really, everything in Canada's goverment is so... dull. Where as yours is just... so scandelous, and rediculas. We love hearing about it, so we can laugh and say 'Oh geez, America is so screwed up. Glad I live in canada, eh. Pass the maple syrup and the beaver, eh.'

Also, as a canadian, I do know who George Bush is, only because I hear how moronic he can be.

And GOD LORD PEOPLE, don't bash me, please, I have nothing against the states. I'm sure they're some nice people. You just gotta look relax and laugh at the things people say and do sometimes.

Speaking as a lowly Canadian, I truly wish you all the luck in getting into a college in the United States. Really. It will be good for both countries if you do. Have you considered early admission? If not, I would highly recommend transferring to a U.S. high school to complete your Grade 12. That way you will get the education you so richly deserve.

it is because canadians are proud or their country just like americans

Are you kidding me? Americans don't talk about Canadians. What a joke. I live have been in the US almost weekly for the past 6 years and i hear a lot about Canada. Daily there are programs on the news. The thing is we have far less crime and destruction to report that's all.Further more the amount of Americans trying to move to Canada has almost doubled in the past couple of years. Why would any Canadian want to live under American rule. No offense to the American citizens because the ones that I have met have all been good people,no matter were they lived, but the American government could learn a thing or to from Canada. A person shouldn't have to go into poverty because a family member gets sick and you have more medical bills. guns violence and war do not solve everything. Maybe you should ask your teacher which education system is actually better and which puts more focus on the sports and arts programs. Maybe the teachers are not grading you subjectively maybe you just can't do the work as well as you think you can. Most teachers really don't care what university you attend as long you attend.

Our news does not just entail events in Canada, however, we like to know what's going on in the world, which includes the United States.

You never talk about Canadians because you guys are always talking about Mexicans...........

Evidently karr1213 cannot spell 'Crisis', is ignorant, uses incorrect syntax and thinks we live in igloos (It was 20 degrees celcius here today, far from frozen, though I applaud them for correctly saying we are in the north)

How do you know your grades are being marked subjectively? Are we THAT nationalistic? I am also in grade 12 and a few of my classmates are American, and I don't think they ever feel like they are being marked unfairly. Perhaps it is your unique situation.

I think the US is a formidable country. You also don't have oil in your ground, plenty of coal but no oil. That is your weakness. Canada's weakness is population. Why are we boring? We lay low and try not to pick fights for sketchy reasons. We talk about the US because everyone does (except, evidently, the people of America). The BBC talks about the US because the actions taken by the US affect many lives. I talk about the US because my father is an over the road truck driver and goes to the states every week. Also, America is kind of funny to talk about. Your accents, the shenanigans of your government, your full-blown patriotism...you make us Canadians feel normal.

Oh, and who will the Americans come crying to when the draft is reinstated as is being threatened? They will be flying over the borders so fast Canadian customs' heads will be spinning.

If you're so "GUNG HO" American, and look down on Canadians, as being "sub-par", why are you going to school in Canada??? Not on par with Americans???? In what way?
Not...Education!!! Not....the dollar!!! Not....intelligence! (based on your comments above). Canadians report the news subjectively.....Americans don't report about Canada, because a lot of them don't know where Canada is.....Anecdote....Just came back from Las Vegas....This "good old boy" from Texas asked me where i was from, and I replied Manitoba. He retorted..."Where the h*** is that?" I replied that it was a small state close to Rhode Island...and he believed me!!!!!! Some of you guys don't even know about your own country.....how can anyone expect you to know anything about another country? I have no hard feelings towards Americans.....just against idiots that think that they are superior...I travel to Vegas every year, and across the border to North Dakota quite often.....by the way, North Dakota is a U.S. state (up north) close to Canada, in case you haven't taken that in school yet.

The US economy affects the Canadian economy directly, and vice versa. Perhaps Americans aren't aware of that, but WE are. Whatever affects us affects them too - Americans would be wise to listen to Canadian news.

JuanB
It's good to see you Americans discussing Canadians. As you say you never do this, yet you are doing it, must be a change for the better. Americans don't usually talk about Canadians because they know nothing about the topic.

Canadians are polite, and talk about Americans in front of you because of that first point. They might as well talk about something you know about, and maybe you'd know about Americans.

I've heard the opposite complaint about Canadian News. I've heard Americans say that Canadian News talks too much about Canadians. Weird, guess it isn't made for Americans to watch Huh? Reality is if you pay attention closely, Canadian News talks about news from around the world. Including stuff that is filtered out of the US broadcasts , so you may want to take notes.

All countries talk about the States.
Everything of interest happens there, and is broadcast all over the world.
Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Britney Spears are all Americans.
Obviously we talk about them.
Americans don't talk about Canadians because we aren't plastered all over their TV screens and newspapers.
A lot of Canadian TV programs show Canadians talking to Americans, saying things like:
"Did you know 1 in 7 Canadian children can't find their home state on a map?"
and they all say
"oh, that's so sad."
(Canada has provinces, not states)
It's not the Americans' fault they don't know anything about anyone else.
I blame the media.

tess
I don't talk about Americans & nor do any of my friends. As far as the news, we show world news. And let's face it alot more goes on in the US. Look at the murders everyday. Where else do you hear about 12 year old kids killing there entire family?
And as far as Americans thinking they're the best. I think that's your countries whole problem. You've been brain washed into thinking your the best nation in the world.
And as far as politics, you have the biggest idiot ever to run the USA. Personally I love the fact that George W is afraid Iran will use nucluer weapons. And I ask myself...what country is the only one to ever drop an atomic bomb? That's right, the good ole US on Japan

The US have a large influence over Canada economically since we are such close trade partners but we are only one tenth of their population, which leaves Canada with much less counter influence over the US. That and as was said, the US do not tend to have much worldly knowledge. Its not just Canada thats different from you on that, most countries tend to learn/care about the world, not just themselves.

I like to think of Canada and the US as brothers; except the US is the retarded one. They need a lot more attention because they're "special". Its nothing to be jealous of that they get more attention, they need it. They have a lot more problems.

You also suggest that your teacher is nationalistic and so your grades suffer, but this teacher would like Canada to be under American rule ? Do I really need to point out whats wrong with that ?

Magnus01
Jealous. Seriously. Do we talk about them? Why? They're just canadians. They are unthreatening as baby lambs with weird accents. Are we bashing the Panamanians? The who!? You ask. Exactly. They're outside the scope of our interest. Name one canadian Territory outside of the ones containing Toronto and Vancouver??? Still stumped? Me too. I bet every Canadian knows our states, our president, our political structure, standards for our cars and even our fastfood restaurants. All we know about Canada is "cold", "french", "hockey" and "beer" What else is there to know?

It seems that as a country, Canada has no true identity. So being a wee little sister to England and being in the Americas surrounded by the American mainland and Alaska, there seems to be a major identity chrisis.

We don't talk about Canada here because there is really nothing much to say. Canada is our uninteresting neighbor that sits to the far frozen North. The politics is boring there, the cities are nice but nothing especially special and all the action is in the US.

But thanks for the insite. I didn't know we were that big of a topic in Canada. ;0)
