Try the University of British Columbia, they rent dorm rooms (quite nice ones) during the summer. Easy to get downtown by bus.

What do you consider reasonable?

Your best bet is to do the research at expedia or travelocity or any other travel website. At expedica.com you can click to sort by price and check out the locations on the map. You can then see your lower price options and check out their websites and/or call and see if they have a weekly rate, or anything cheaper.

Keep in mind, you find cheaper hotels away from downtown, like in the outskirts or by the airport, and depending on what your plans for your trip are, and how you are getting around it might not be worth it. Example, a small savings in hotel can be spent on a taxi ride to and from your destination very quickly.

if you have a budget, try using my dad's search engine website. www.wvtraveldeals.com . in the top right corner, click on book travel. once you're there, on the left you'll see "power search your trip" It goes through every search engine on the internet to find you the best price availible :]

i hope you have a great time in vancouver ! i heard it's a beautiful place :]
