I am going to canada by air, and all I have is a drivers liscense and a birth certificate. Will I get in?

You will not be allowed on an international flight without a passport.

That would be enough if you were driving across the border; since you are flying, you do need a passport! If the flight is scheduled for the next 3 weeks or so, it is most likely that you'll not be on it.

No. You cannot fly with just that. If you are a US citizen and flying before September 30th, 2007 you will need proof you have applied for a passport in addition to the documents you list. If flying after then you need your passport.

Unlike suggested in most of these answers, you will not have a chance to get into Canada then get stuck there. You will be denied boarding to your flight to Canada right at the airport. The whole idea is to increase security of American flights, remember!

The airlines in USA have been told that for any international flight, passengers must present a passport or they will be denied passage through the security checkpoints by Homeland Security. As a result, the major airlines all check for this as a courtesy to their passengers and to not delay their planes unnecessarily.

I would check with your airline and confirm this if you have NOT already bought your ticket. If you did buy a ticket, you may be allowed on the flight if you can show proof (stamped receipt from passport office) that you have applied for a passport but it simply has not arrived yet. Homeland Security was supposed to be allowing people with that proof to board planes until September 2007.

The only other option is to take a domestic flight to a city as close to the Canadian border as possible (Detroit or Buffalo for example), and then rent a car or take a bus to the Canadian border and cross by LAND. The land border crossings are accepting Photo ID and birth certificates as proof of citizenship still up until June 2008. (If you rent a car, make sure that the rental agency authorizes the car to be driven into Canada)

I hope you have already applied for your passport. If you are coming to Canada from the US you may get in if you are allowed to board by accident, but that is very unlikely since they will check your passport. US regulations require everyone travelling by air to the US or on a flight landing in the US to have a passport or, as stated in other answers, proof one has been applied for if you will complete your travel prior to the end of Sept, 07. If your trip extends beyond then you will need your passport in hand before you leave. So if you plan on flying here I would say you are out of luck unelss you meet this requirement. If you are coming from another country then no, you will no even be able to board the plane as you require a passport to board. If you booked through a travel agent they should have the information and told you about requirements when you booked. If you booked it yourself online then most sites have the requirements listed for travel.

If you were coming by car or other land based transport (I.e. bus, train) you would have no problem getting into Canada and returning to the US. One option is to fly to a city near the Canadian border then rent a car or travel across by bus to your destination.

Your birth certificate and drivers license will be enough to allow you entry only if you are a U.S. citizen (which I'm assuming you are). If you're coming from somewhere else though, then a passport will be required for entry into Canada (of course you won't even be allowed past check-in at your departure point without it).

As to what others have said about re-entry into the U.S. officials will accept other types of government issued documents in lieu of a passport ONLY if you have already applied for a passport (See: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html ) So my recommendation is at least to apply for it just so you can get back to the U.S. without any problems.

Sure, but if you are coming from the US, you won't be allowed to fly home, so maybe get your passport unless you want to live the rest of your life in a locker in the international part of the airport.
