I am planning to go on a major road trip to Toronto, Ontario Canada?

So my question is what procedures do I need to take to legally drive there? I am thinking of taking my own car but I might want to take a rental. Is that possible at all? I am going to apply for a passport about a month or so before the actual trip so would that be all that I need?

Oh and I live in the USA LOL

American car rental companies will NOT allow you to take their property ( the car ) out of the USA, period.

In order to enter Canada by land, you will need ( until June of 2009 : a original ( not a photocopy ) of your US birth certificate, AND a US state issued photo ID card, such as a driver's licence.

You also will need to have a " Inter Provincial Insurance Liability Card " from your US car insurance company, that proves that you have the proper amount of liability insurance, that is required by Canadian law. You get that card from your local insurance brokers office, for free.

If you have a US passport, bring it, too.

Bear in mind that while you are in Canada, you are subject to OUR laws, and traffic regulations, so . saying " I didn't know it was wrong to do it " will NOT be accepted here. Especially drinking and driving .Seat belts are mandatory here, for everyone at all times while the car is moving and radar detectors are illegal in Canada, so don;'t bring one here. The fine is $500 and they keep the radar detector, too.

oooo, sounds fun, can I come? lol
When I went to Toronto, I just drove there with my car, why waste money on a rental. Make sure you get that passport, and bring your drivers license too. Oh and remember, Miles per hour is underneath kilometers per hour on the speed limit signs.

all u need is a passport to go into the country. you can drive your own car up there coz i go up there for months with my car...if you going during the winter u might not want to take your car. one time we took my car and salt was everywhere on it, it started rusting big time because we didnt wash it down good..so if you take your car make sure you wash it down if there is snow up there and they salt the roads.

i think u should stay home....I thought u guys all hated Canada anyways...u and the Taliban...

You should apply much sooner for a passport, since it is likely to take more than a month to recieve it. You can get an expedited passport, which will cost more money (I believe it is around $150, but I don't remember exactly), but will get to you faster. You can tell them when you apply when you need the passport by. There are new regulations for Canada and Mexico so the state dept anticipates long waits for passports. Now, if you just want to get a Passport Card, you can do this, and drive to Canada. This is much cheaper, and it is likely to get to you faster. It is only good for land or sea border crossings to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. I am not sure if you will need other documentation such as your birth certificate (definitely you will need your driver's license) since some of the rules are changing, but check out the state dept's webstite, it will tell you everything you need to know.

take me with you; I hear it's beautiful there. I think you need either a Visa, passport or your American Driver's License. Call a rental company up there and ask, like Budget or Enterprise. and Canadian dollars.

Curious Me
Since 9/11, border crossings procedures have changed. You will need a passport #1. You can drive your own car with no problem. If you rent a car here for driving to Canada, the rental rate is higher than for US driving. Your drivers license is photo proof also. I would be sure to take proof of car insurance and car registration.
Good luck and have fun, too.

well at my school the 7th and 8th grade go on a bus into Canada and last year we stopped at the line and went in a building with a hell of a lot of Canadians in it and they took our passports and we left. so you should be good just taking your car i think. u should probably ask someone else tho
