I am thinking of moving to Canada...? |
I cannot no longer stand conservative, corporate America and am looking for a change. I have seen Canada painted as a liberal, active, beautiful, and hockey loving country...I have also heard that Canada has high taxes, high cost of living, it is hard to get a job, and that Canadians are not very welcoming to Americans. I love hockey, I am liberal, and I am soon to graduate from Michigan State University with a masters degree in social work. Please give me some feedback on whether or not the above statements are true, and if you think I should move to Canada (if yes, could you suggest a place?). |

Half my family lives in CAN and Half in the US. I have many friends in CAN and know many social workers up there. I would say that some of your understanding is accurate, but obviously overly generalized. CAN is a huge and diverse country (just like the US). Each province is very different. If I were to move to CAN I would look toward the west, Calgary and Vancouver being top on my list. But Toronto and Montreal are great cities as well. All of these cities have MSW programs which actually can be an aid to you finding jobs. To move to CAN to work you would need to have an employer looking to hire you and as with the US they look to hire CAN first. As for the people....I find the Canadian's very friendly and welcoming of US citizens. DA |

I was born in Canada and most of my family is from there. It really is a great place. I am only 15, so I won't be so helpful about telling you about jobs, but I can say that yes, there is a higher cost of living and people there seem to have so much money.
If you love hockey, then you will fit it. About the whole Canadians not being welcoming to Americans, it depends on what part of Canada you are planning to move to. Quebec is a little less welcoming, since their culture is so french influenced, but places like Toronto and the non-french provinces are welcoming. But, I find Canadians to be very friendly. If you don't want to deal with language differences, then I wouldn't suggest moving to Quebec, even though it is a great place (it's where I'm from). Ottowa is beautiful and the city is great I think you should move there. |

Canadians love Americans......except for Biffnasty who hates the fact that he is American and would like to be Canadian. He works off his anger by insulting Canadians who wouldn't let him in our country. We don't like idiots!
Canada is beautiful and I'm sure you would love it. The taxes are higher but it is well worth it when you consider all we have. As an American you can balance our high cost of taxes with our health care which is exceptional and we don't have to pay extra for it. |

Any place would be fine with me. I love Canada, and I speak French too, so I am already to go!
It is not true that they don't like us. Do you judge a whole country because of a few duds? Be open-minded and learn some French that way you will be even more accepted. I found Canadians to be highly friendly, but maybe because I am. Word of advice, on a camping trip we stopped at a hotel at three in the morning, and the price was more than trippled. Don't settle! We went to another and they couldn't believe it, and gave us a discount too. |

It is true our taxes are a little on the High Side and as for the high cost of living it depends on the city you choose to live in.Right now they are looking for people in Alberta which is in Western Canada. |

I'm Canadian and have no issues with Americans or anyone. i only have beef with people that are here and complain,i mean why r you here then?? yeah, more of us are liberal(i ain't) taxes are higher than most provinces, but we did have a 1%tax deduction this year and a job is easy if you know where to look or have a valuable trade.you can always try it here,if you dont like it,go back or somewhere else :P good luck:) |

Canada loves Americans. I live in Quebec which you do need french to get a job here but you can get along here with very limited french for visiting etc. We are peace loving, very open minded not racist and yes we love hockey. We do love our winters and other places in Canada are great. |

actually canada is a conservative government right now. people tend to think conservatives tend to copy american government policies. but im not sure if that is justified. the high taxes and cost are not very true. the mortgage rates here are better than US it's a great place to live. it's not hard to get a job. |

Taxes are high yes for sure. Cost of living is probably higher too, but in part that depends on where you live. Housing etc in places like Toronto or course will be much higher. 99.9% of Canadians llove hockey. (I'm the .01% who does not) Work is easy to find if you want it. The lazy ones use no jobs as an excuse to sit around and do nothing.
I would suggest somewhere like Mississagua, Milton, Burlington, Oakville area if you were thinking of the Toronto area. You would still only about about 3 hours from the Michegan border so pretty close for those visits home. |

We have nothing against american... but you always have the odd people.
Taxes are different in each province but it's higher than the states for a good reason, Health care!!, jobs are relatively easy to find, i think you'll be find...
The cost of living is very different from east to west.
Out west it's very expensive but get paid a lot... BC and alberta are the richest province.
Ontario/Quebec, have reasonable taxes, and reasonable price for houses.
Of course major cities are more expensive.
Suggestion: Ottawa, Montreal |

May I suggest that you travel first to Canada and spent a few weeks there. Go out there and speak to the people.
There are also websites where you can chat with canadians to get a better understanding of the country there.
Good luck! |

well i moved here from canada 17 years ago and did try to go back several years ago and had to come back to america. for one the taxes are just brutal. the tax from your wages is close to 45 % or something close to it. taxes on goods and services just as bad, gas has about 6 different taxes. yes it is very beautiful and the people are a different but they have to work very hard to keep ahead. i lived in nova scotia (one of the poorer provinces) as a nurse, made fairly good money, but again, the taxes were just too much. plus....it is very very cold.....the winters are very long and while it's true they do love their hockey, in NS they love their beer....there's not much else to do in the winter sadly....as far as liberal goes....i woudl say most canadians tend to be a little more on the conservative side...but it's been a while...maybe out west they are more liberal....but be careful....the japensese are taking over out there.....oh and most provinces are very welcoming to americans.....with the exception of quebec...but they don't even like canadians......french canadians are to be avoided at all costs!!! |

Well if and when you do get a job in Canada and pay those high taxes to pay for thier universal healthcare go for it. I hope you don't get sick and need to wait in line for a doctor visit. But as a liberal, why work at all. Move to Canada and do nothing and apply for a social program. I'm sure that will not keep you up at night. Remember, you can't have socialism without capitalism. |
