In Vancouver, check out Granville Island - the market and the paths around are super. The UBC campus is pretty amazing, and there are some really good microbreweries.
Take the train through the Rockies if at all possible, instead of flying over them. The scenery is superb.
Go to Lake Louise - again, superb natural beauty. Banff is good.
I can't offer much about the Prairies, not having spent much time there. Calgary and Edmonton are both neat cities. If you can make your visit coincide with the Calgary Stampede that is a really cool time to be there. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are really flat. Try to get caught in a lightning storm, it is amazing, it lights up the sky and you can see for miles and miles.
Ontario - Toronto. Go up the CN Tower. Must do. And Niagara Falls is one of those legends you just have to visit. The Niagara region is known for wine, and there are lots of small winery tours to go on. Niagara parkway is a very long stretch lovely to rollerblade, walk, or bike along.
Quebec - Quebec City is smaller and quainter; Montreal larger, more English in parts, bigger university population, more sleaze. Both are well worth visits. See the Chateau Frontenac.
Sounds like you're going to miss the Maritimes, which is a pity - Halifax (Nova Scotia) is a very funky, multicultural, fun port city and the summer is full of festivals and stuff. PEI is absolutely stunning in the summer, amazing beaches. |

Go to Vancouver Island before you head towards Quebec.
In Edmonton the place where most people go at night is Whyte Ave.
You should also check out the different festivals in different cities that you are planning to go to (or are interested in going to).

How long do you plan to spend in Canada? And what kind of person are you? The road from Vancouver to Quebec crosses many fabulous national parks. If you're into hiking, camping, canoeing and all that outdoorsey stuff, plan to take a little time to explore them. If you're just planning a quick look as you drive across, head for the Rocky Mountains and hop on the glacier crawler (a tractor trailer) that takes you across the Columbia Ice Fields. Awesome!
In Alberta, Calgary is the place to be -- it's a lively, vibrant city. In Saskatchewan, head up to Saskatoon and the river bank festivals -- lots of arts and culture stuff there. Manitoba has Winnipeg, and the HBC musuem. Hudson Bay Company was one of the founding companies that helped Canada form. It also had significant roots in the US, along with the North West Company. Most Americans have no idea that at one point the HBC and NWC had forts clear down to San Francisco. The Forks is a fun and funky site to spend some time in, while you're in Winnipeg. But take lots of bug juice. Manitoba Mosquitos are world famous -- with good cause!
Enjoy your trip, and drive safely. |

I think you will find the people to be very friendly and helpful. Some of the French speakers may be a little rude to you, but don't let it trouble you. I live in Texas, a long way from Canada, but have been there several times, and I consider people there to my my cousins, almost as if it is not a foreign country. Look carefully at the beautiful paper money. Wish ours was that nice. Taxes are high to support their semi-welfare state. Quebec and Montreal are great. Banff and Lake Louise out West are great. Have a good time. |
