Depends on what your nationality is. For a day visit, you're probably just fine but if you needed a visa to visit Canada, chances are you might have some trouble at the border. If you didn't need a visa for Canada, its pretty much a guarantee a valid passport will do just fine.

Jammin
If you are a British citizen, you do not need a visa to visit the USA no matter what country you enter the States from, IF you meet the following requirements:

British citizens travelling to the USA
In order to qualify for the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) to/via the United States of America:
1 If your passport is issued before 26 October 2006, it needs to be a Machine Readable Passport (MRP) with digitised photograph. It will remain valid for travel under the VWP until its expiry date. You do not need to exchange your MRP for a Biometric Passport.
2. If your passport is issued after 26 October 2006, it needs to be a Biometric Passport.

Holders of British Emergency Passports transiting the USA are also be affected by these new measures.

From 30 September 2004, British visitors travelling to the US under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) are likely to have their two index fingers scanned and a digital photograph taken when they arrive. For full details please consult US-Visit programme website

For further information on US visas please consult the United States visa website: www.unitedstatesvisas.gov or www.usembassy.org.uk

Yes, you probably do. Otherwise they detain you at the border as an Alien. Happened to me.

I'm not sure where you are travelling from, but I think a passport would suffice. As a Canadian I've only ever needed my driver's licence to cross the border. You could check on; http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/home.xml

you don't need a visa for a day! all you need to proof of your citizenship from whatever country you're from. ie birth cirtificate, passport, photo id, SSN card. on january 7th you will be reqired to have a passport for all border crossings between canada and the US

Kango Man
Not if you sneak in, say by climbing up Niagara Falls.

If you have a valid passport and you're just coming over for a day visit you're cool.
