I don't have a certified Birth Certificate. Is there any way I can still cross the Canadian Border?

The only birth certificate I have is the one from the hospital where I was born and I'm leaving for spring break tomorrow so I don't have time to order a certified copy. My friend just got back from Canada and he said all he needed to get across was a driver's liscence and they didnt even ask for his birth certificate. Is there any way they will let me across? Or should I not even waste my time driving a long ways to get turned down?

You probably won't have any trouble getting into Canada with just an official state I.D. (such as drivers license). Sometimes they ask for proof of citizenship (which is the purpose of a passport or birth certificate), but not always.

However, if you don't have a copy of birth certificate, expect some hassle coming back into the U.S. Haven't gone through yet, and I cross the border 2-5 times a month, that they haven't asked for proof of citizenship on the U.S. side.

P.S. ... Have Fun!

You can try it but know that there is a definate chance that you can be turned away unless you have valid photo id and birth certificate OR you could use a passport.

if you are an american citizen all you need to cross the border at this time is a photo id,preferably a drivers license or some form of military id....june 2008 you will need a passport

I too live near the border and for the time being all you need is a valid picture id and your birth certificate. They may not be that vigiliant going into canada but they will be coming back into the us.

I would suggest very strongly for any american and canadian travelling to the anywhere other than their own country to acquire a valid passport. In canada they're good for five years, and it wouldn't surprise me if the US didn't require that sooner rather than later.

You should be okay, but take as much ID as you have.. especially a drivers license if you have it.. anything with a photo that corroborates your other ID is good too.

From the US by car all you need is an id for now. A week ago we went to Canada (I can see Canada from my deck) they didn't ask for any id going over but they did coming back. You shouldn't need a birth certificate.

Danelady
All you really need is a driver's license. If there is going to be any hassle, it will be on the American side.

Greg
you need a pass port now they will tell you to turn around
