I got into University of Western Ontario.. Please help?

Hi!!

I don't live in Canada so I have a few questions I'm hoping somebody could help me with!!

Does Western have a good reputation in Canada? Is it considered a good university? I know it's not like Mcgill or University of Toronto but looking at the website I really like it!

Is London a nice city to live in? I will be living on campus in the dorms so that doesn't matter much.

Has anybody here gone there? What do you think?

I got in for Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies.

The other universities I have in mind are Mcgill and Waterloo, but neither have replied yet.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's a good university. To some extent all the universities are the same in Canada because they're all publicly funded, but because Western is an older school it's better well known than some other universities.

London is fairly nice, I have a few friends there and they seem to enjoy the city. I personally find it on the smaller scale, but it's probably good if you're new to Canada because smaller cities are easier to establish yourself and meet people (or so I think).

CaptainCrunch
Yeah, Western is a great school with a very good reputation, for both academics and campus life. You'll also find that London is a great city to live in. It's a smallish city but you'll find everything you need there .. including great people, food, and Night life. It's about a 2 hour drive from both Toronto and Windsor/Detroit, Michigan.

Western has a pretty good reputation. And London is an okay city. The area around campus is quite nice, the campus is massive in comparison to other universities in Ontario. Parts of London away from campus are not very nice, as I've been told.

You need over an 83 average to get into Western, which is quite a tough requirement. I know McMaster is 78 and Waterloo is 75 I believe.

But just to be aware, Western is notoriously seen as a "party" school and I've heard the partying atmosphere can interfere with a person's studies.

good choice and congrats.
It has been known as a party school but you need good grades to get in so it's not just slack

Dead Day Afternoon
You'll love Western and living in London.
It's a good school and the city has everything you need.
It'll be fine, no worries.

Gemna
Western does have a good reputation. It's one of the top 10 in Canada.
London is a nice city, but you may find it small depending on where your from (or rather what size of city you're used to). I like Western, but I like Montreal better than London. Montreal is more multi-cultural. But that's not to say that London doesn't have a variety of cultures. The number are probably a little different for the university itself (ie there are many Asians at UWO) But let the numbers speak for themselves:

London Demographics
White: 87.2%, Latin American: 1.7%, Black: 1.4%, South Asian: 1.3%, mixed race: 1.3% Aboriginal: 1.3%

Montreal
Some 26 percent of the population of Montreal and 16.5 percent of Greater Montreal are members of a visible minority (non-white) group.

I like multiculturalism, that why I bring this up. London is too "white" for me... But I am not helping since I'm white too! :P

Congratulations on your admission!

Western is a great university and London is a great little town. For your undergrad, it is a good school to attend as well. McGill is good too and Montreal is a terrific city as well, and Waterloo is well known for their science programs - Kitchener is a smaller city than London but still lots of fun.

I know you will enjoy it at Western and it's a great school I went to University of Toronto which is also a terrific school.
