It is true that you cannot travel between Canada and the U.S. by air if you are not carrying a valid passport.
You may still travel, however, by land (ie. car, bus, train), with a naturalization certificate. This too, will be eventually phased out, possibly in 2008 or 2009, but as of now (October 2007) you can still cross the Canada-U.S. land border without a passport. If you wish confirmation of this check the website below:

yeah. if you drive across the border.

You just can't FLY right now. So if you want to make the drive, rent a car - and go.

Wish Upon a Shooting Star
Yes you can.

if you are driving you don't need a passport until september next year.

for flying- I'm not sure...call the airlines and find out.

We are not terrorists يا عيني
you can travel to the USA by land without a passport with a proof of canadian citizenship and another piece of ID such as a drivers license, until september 08. By air, you absolutely require a valid passport (and visa for nationals of certain countrires), no matter what the emergency is.

winwin
You can't travel without passport. Pay more to get the passport asap.
