I have a question about receiving a package from USA to Canada through ebay.?

I live in Toronto and I bought a jacket from ebay. It's coming from NY and it cost me $150. Do I have to pay duty fees when I go pick it up at the post office? What if I tell the seller to put that it cost $60 on it? Will I still have to pay the duty fee?

thats a hit and miss, customs randomly checks items, and if they check yours you may have to pay, but you wil never know until it happens, on the customs label , the seller should mark it as gift and in that case its rare to pay duty fees

depending on what the declared value is that is on the import sticker you will have to pay gst pst and brokerage fees take a chance and get the seller to put a low declared value on it and in the box put gift not jacket

Contrary to what "Fishing" said, I have had the exact opposite experience. I have bought many items in USA on the internet, both from eBay and direct from US businesses. The only times I have had problems was when the US Postal Servive (USPS) handled it. Let me clarify:

The US Postal Service does not deliver to Canada. They bring the mail to Canada Post's central depots and then Canada Post is responsible for routing the mail the rest of the way. Since they did not collect any postage to do this, they have to pay for the shipping and handling through their system somehow. As a result, they often will charge their own handling fee on top of the shipping charges you ALREADY paid to the eBay seller. So the package arrives with a COD bill for anywhere from $5 to $50, plus taxes.

Besides that, since they do not have a private brokerage firm to get the packages across the border like UPS or FEDEX, your package may sit on a shelf in some Canada Customs warehouse for 3-4 weeks until they get around to either opening it to confirm the contents, or finally allowing it to ship out.

Since I was burnt four times (three times for charges, once for severely delayed delivery) I now try to make sure anyone I deal with will hip via UPS or FEDEX. I'll pay the extra shipping charges because I know exactly what I am going to pay up front...no hidden costs that add to the total bill.

Getting back to the actual question you asked:

1) You probably will not pay duty if it was listed as a gift, even at $150 value. However, you may be required to pay GST.

2) If the seller lists the package as worth only $60, he may be guilty of providing fraudulent customs documents. And if the package is lost, either you or he will only be able to collect $60 from the post office.

You might get away with it ,but sometimes customs can ask you to produce a copy of you ebay receipt. They do open these packages. so you take your chances........

I receive packages many times from the states ....
if the seller places it is a gift or that it was originally manufactured in canada then you do not pay duty fees

but if they place that it was sold to you and place a price the duty will be on the price they declared.

Its happened where I bought a used camera for 20.00 and the dumb seller places that they valued it at a 150.00 and then I was charged the duty on 150

but I find alot of experience sellers just place it is a gift

sometimes you have to and sometimes your lucky and it comes through without duty

i by from ebay all the time and have only had to pay once

try to pick sellers that DO NOT us UPS as they charge a hefty brokerage fee,i never use them anymore
i Have never had to pay extra shipping when using USPS as steven said above
and get them in a timely manner and i buy from the states all the time

I don't believe there are duty fees with ebay. But don't lie, if it is lost all you'll get is $60.

Fishing for Truth
Make sure they send it US Mail and not UPS or some other the service charges are huge! Not sure about the duty I haven't ordered many things from the US to Canada I just had them put the right price on it and haven't had much or any duty.
