I have a question about travelling to Canada by land.

I just asked a question about travelling by LAND to Canada from the USA, The Government site says all I need is my Birth Certificate and a Drivers License, But so many people say I need a passport, So Im confused.. Can anyone clear this up for me?

If it helps, Im flying from Houston to Vermont, Then getting a ride from my girlfriends parents to Montreal,Quebec. So im domestic flying then travelling over the border by car. Thanks
Additional Details
Yeah I would get a passport but its a little late-notice for it to arrive in the mail.. Im leaving next Sunday and I just wanted to make sure Id be able to get across the border.. but if it all fails, Can I get out of the car and walk down the border till I can hop it without being seen? (Last resort of course)

If you are traveling by land you only require your original birth certificate and a government issued photo id (ex drivers license) to cross the border into Canada.

Until June 1,2009 that is the case for land travel, unless they push the date back again.

Canadian Border Services Requirements Below.

Happy Travels, and Btw that is a beautiful part of the country(Vermont to Montreal)

You have the correct answer. People who say you need a passport for LAND travel to and from Canada simply have not read the U.S. State Dep't website. See site below to read for yourself again. It means exactly what it says...you will not need a passport for land travel to and from Canada until June 1, 2009.

Do I need a passport to travel to Mexico and Canada?
The answer is yes if traveling by air: you need a passport to return to the United States. The answer is no if crossing borders by land or sea.

All you need is a birth certificate and drivers license but a passport does the same thing as them put together. So if you want to on the passport but u dont have to.

I would not advise "hopping" the border. If you are caught, you will be subject to a record, hefty fines and will be denied entry to Canada for life. As of right now, all you need is a birth certificate and some other valid type of photo ID to back it up. June 2009 is when you will need your passport even when traveling by land.

tuppenybitz
if your flying to canada you must have a passport

driving across the border you need a government issued photo ID and a birth certificate

june 2009 you will need a passport for all travel out of the states and back

It's been a long time since I went into Canada but if it's just a day visit or a short visit you should be ok.

Get a passport, you need it to go across the border. Because it is not USA land. It belongs to the country called CANADA!

You need your drivers license and birth certificate to get a passport. Go online to get it.

someday, i will change the world
