I have a six hour layover in Toronto... any reccomendations?

I will be flying through Toronto on Monday and just realized that I have a six hour layover... Can anyone reccomend a good way to fill my time? I can't imagine wandering the airport for that long... How far is the airport from downtown? Is there anything I can do in the city in that period? Thanks

The worst thing about travelling to Toronto by plane is the fact that the airport is so far away from downtown. In fact, the airport isn't even in Toronto - it's in a neighbouring city, Mississauga, which less than 20 years ago practically used to be all farms, so you can imagine it's not all that happenin' now ;)

I'd bring a good book and some cash and park yourself in the airport.

You'll need to factor in your check in time....so, 1 OR 2 hours? Then to get anywhere within a reasonable time you'll need a taxi.

If you want to see anything downtown, that'll cost you about 45 dollars (one way) and the trip, assuming you don't have rush hour traffic will take about 40 minutes one way.

So that's 2 hours for check in & one and a half hours for taxi travel = three & a half hours shot right there. So, it can be done......just a little hectic.

Do you like to walk? If the weather is nice you could take a walk along the airport strip....not exactly a vacation destination....but there are some nice hotels to wander thru and plenty of restaurants. You could treat yourself to lunch/dinner.

Hmm, six hours is really cutting it short. It takes about 40 minutes to downtown by cab, more if it's during rush hour. You'd need to check in about an hour before your flight (more if it's an international flight), so that would only leave you about 3 hours to really do anything, that's considering that your arriving flight is in on time.

There's lots to do and see in Toronto, but you'd better leave it for an other occasion when you actually have more time. You might want to spend a couple of days here, and even take a tour down to Niagara Falls, or something!

The time is too short

Just FYI, if you leave the airport you have to check out and check back in - that means security and customs. Which means you have to be there 2 hours ahead anyway to check in again. I wouldn't recomend leaving the airport, and the officals there don't like it either.

The aiport itself is HUGE - amazing and brand new - there is much to see, great shops and loads of areas to eat, drink, and even have a nap. Bring a book, your lap top, write some postcards, sit/drink/eat in the lounges and chat people up, do some shopping.

Downtown is not that close - and about $35 by cab one way.

G'day phillipsa09,

Thank you for your question.

Looking at Yahoo! Travel, the top attractions in Toronto are:

1. CN Tower (the world's tallest centre)

2. Rogers Centre (Home of the Blue Jays)

3. Eaton Centre (a huge shopping centre)

4. Casa Loma (a huge castle like estate); and

5. The Hockey Hall of Fame (for those who could give a puck - jokes aside, it is a great place for those who have an interest in hockey).

The main airport in Toronto is Toronto Pearson International Airport. Pearson Airport is located about 32 km (20 miles) west of downtown Toronto. Most of Pearson (including its passenger terminals and airplane facilities) is in Mississauga, but a small eastern portion of land is located in Toronto. The airport is accessible from Highway 427 (just north of the Highway 401 interchange) or from Highway 409, a spur off Highway 401 leading directly into the airport. Each terminal can be accessed by three access roads, one access road per terminal.

Bus services connecting Toronto to Pearson Airport include two Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) routes, an express running from Kipling subway station and a local route from Lawrence West station, the latter also continuing beyond the airport to Malton. GO Transit operates a semi-express bus from York Mills and Yorkdale stations, and there is a privately operated "Airport Express" bus serving various major downtown hotels. Mississauga Transit operates a city bus from the Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga's city centre, likewise continuing on to Malton. The Toronto Transit Commission advertises a 45 minute travelling time but you then have to budget for getting from the bus station to where you want to go which will be at least 15 minutes. The cost of travelling between Toronto and the Airport is $40 Canadian each way so it will cost a bit too.

In July 2006, the LINK Interterminal Shuttle people mover was opened, with two 6-car trains running between Terminals 1 and 3, and a reduced rate and airport staff parking lot on the other side of Airport Road at Viscount Drive.

You should budget at least an hour and possibly an hour and a half in getting to and from the airport. As well, you would want to book in for your flight at least an hour beforehand. That gives you two to three hours for sightseeing so you should think seriously about whether you have the time to do it. You don't want to get it wrong and miss your flight.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

This is quite a short time to do any thing around.

You could go to the mall in Mississauga.......Square one.
It's a pretty big mall to kill some time.
Look up things to do in Mississauaga.....not too far from the airpoart

6 hours is too short to see Toronto......and 6 hours is too long at the airport.....

You could take the taxi to downtown, however it can cost you a lot of money. But there is a way to get downtown by public transit, but it will cost 2.75 Adult fare Canadian. The bus will take you to Kipling subway station, and you can take the subway to downtown. If you see the line heading for south from St. George, it will go around 'til Bloor-Yonge, now that's more of downtown.

Union subway station - C.N. Tower, SkyDome..

Queen & Dundas subway stations are connected to malls. Queen has a popular mall called Toronto Eaton Centre. You can kill your time around the mall, have a look, eat. But you've got to hurry up and get back to the airport 2 hours before, so that means you'd have free time for about 4 hours.

Hope this helps. If you want, I can be your tour guide, haha. :) If you need further information, feel free to contact me at: totally_del@hotmail.com .
