i get annoyed when people answer this question as if they know... US GREEN CARD HOLDERS DO NOT NEED A VISA TO ENTER CANADA. all you need to do is just present your greencard and your passport.
you need your passport with you because you are not an american citizen. as with travel to other countries, passport is required as an identification.
however, your green card will enable you to enter canada without the need of a visa.
i have both maple leaf and green card... and have been going back to canada to visit my family with just my passport and green card. don't listen to the other answerers... they're only thinking about american citizens, not permanent residents.
check out the canadian government website to be sure. they'll tell you exactly what i told you.

I believe you don't need to have a visa as of yet to get into Canada. All you need are two pieces of identification such as a birth certificate and driver's license.

Never heard of a "Permanent Resident Card", the last time we went into Canada we just showed our DL.
BUT! Coming back they hassled us for a Passport which we had with us but didn't show at first because the DL was all we needed on the initial crossing.

NO until Jan/2008 you don't need anything except birth certif. but since your NOT an American citizen you may need a passport.

its very easi to get in to canada but very hard to get out because of usa's security
