Before you land in Canada, you will be given a form to fill out, which tells Customs what items you are bringing for gifts, sale, etc. Then, when you land in Montreal, you will need to go through Customs, give them the form, and answer some questions. Usually they are like "How long are you staying," "Is the trip business or pleasure," etc.
After you answer the questions, they will stamp your passport and then the let you through customs to get your luggage, and usually they x-ray your luggage on your way through, looking for things that you aren't supposed to have (drugs, large sums of $, etc). Once you are done with that, you are done.
But if at any time in the process, you act all nervous and weird, they can choose to perform a closer search of you and your belongings. If the search turns up any contraband or other illegal items, they can choose to deport you or send you to jail (or both).
If you are just visiting (and not running any drugs or anything like that), it is a very simple process that really isn't too bad. The worst part is that you have to wait in line, sometimes for an hour or so.
Oh, and expect the same on the way back to the US.

Check the website of the airline you are flying to be absolutely 100% positive.
But I would be shocked if you needed anything other than your passport. |

Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay in Canada and that you have a return ticket too.
The Immigration Officer will ask you a few standard/routine questions so make sure you pay attention to that and don't end up wasting his/her time.
You should have to fill out a green customs' form on board also to hand to the Immigration Officer upon arrival - all to do with what you're carrying with you, products you're trying to enter into the country, etc.
Have fun in Montreal - a whole month huh?
