You probably heard that because, for a while, the government decriminalized having less than 15 grams, so instead you would just get a fine (like a speeding ticket) rather than crminal charges. I'm pretty sure that the law has been overturned, but if you get caught with only a small amount, the vast majority of cops will just take it and leave. Only cops on power trips would try to do more, and the best way to deal with them is let them think theyre important and do what they say, it will get you in the least trouble |

No, it is not true. Weed is illegal in Canada unless you have a medical prescription to use it. |

It's illegal in Canada
but if you aren't being stupid about it, like being openly high, or smoking in public, the cops will most likely just take it away, without giving you a ticket or anything
the drinking age is Canada is 19, that would be a nice place to go for your next birthday, eh? |

No, it isn't legal to smoke it here, and you cannot legally buy it. |

it's not true.
the legal penalties are lower, but several states in the US have more liberal marijuana policies.

It isn't legal in the proper sense of the word but it's also not going to get you in a boatload of trouble either if it's a personal amount. It's a grey area of the law with pot. The police can either currently ticket you and confiscate the joint or just ignore you. Sometimes they'll just ask you to put it out. Their option. Our pot laws are more or less in limbo. The courts here have been begging the Federal Government to come up with a constituionally valid law for a number of years, yet no politician wants to go near the subject. The result is what we have now. It's illegal, but it is "semi legal", that is, most cases get tossed out of court if they go that far as unconstitutional. A number of years ago, I was at a Pro pot rally downtown Toronto watching a pal of mine play in his band, fatties being passed everywhere right in front of the Police. No arrests anywhere. That was before it was considered just a finable offence and you actually went to court for possession of a joint. Nowadays it's more lax and there are actually some "cafes" where although you can't purchase pot from them, they will allow you to smoke on their premisis. Toronto has 3 for example, one of which was in the news last week, the owner being charged for selling pot brownies ( the "cafe" is a bakery too) but apparently it's still open. Vancouver has a few as well I understand.
Buying it? Helps to have friends is all I can say. Most major cities have their " corners" but you are at your own peril there. You also may not get what you pay for. Your best bet may to actually visit one of those cafes I mentioned and ask a patron if they have a joint to spare.
As for being 18, well, that just means you get to pay your fine if you're ticketed and your parents will be left out of it.
Bottom line I suppose is smoke at your own risk. A cop having a bad day could make your purse a little lighter.
Edit: Antionette is actually pretty bang on regarding that area of Montreal. It is widely accpted. |

It's still illegal. They haven't passed any laws to say otherwise. I suggest you waste your time on something useful like learning.... |

Its illegal but.....
Cops in general will turn the other cheek if it is a small amount, are not driving, and don't hassle them. If you act like an asshole than they will charge you.
Its readily available everywhere and you can have it delivered to your door, no matter what the weather is 20 minutes after making a call if you live downtown or in the Plateau neighborhood, like where I am in Montreal.
Here in Montreal, it is o.k. and acceptable, for sure in my hip neighborhood, the Plateau to smoke a joint at the park or outside.
Now Canada is a huge country and I live in one the hippest neighborhoods in the whole country so my answer is reflective of the open mindedness of my area. |
