There is no set drinking age in Canada. The provinces establish their own drinking age requirements. In Quebec the legal drinking age is 18, in Ontario it's 19. They don't care where you come. Canadian provinces don't enforce other jurisdictions laws. They have enough trouble enforcing their own laws.

gmkday
False story.

wahoo
I doubt that to be true...when in Canada the drinking age is 19, so it does not matter where you were born or what nationality you are...you on Canadian soil...so 19 is all that matters...have at it...

Colin
19 is the legal drinking age in Canada, except in Manitoba, Alberta and Quebec where it's 18. It doesn't matter if you're visiting from another province or country, if you're old enough to drink in that bar, you can. They don't enforce out-of-jurisdiction laws, just their own.

However, some bars have the right to refuse the sale of their product to anyone for no particular reason, so be mindful of that.

Doesn't this sound just a bit racist to you?? The bars, who love the revenue would only have to pull out the race card to fight any movement headed that way. At best they might reject certain types of ID that can be faked, but if you have a passport or drivers license you are set.

We have been hearing rumours of this a lot, but never "where" it is happening. It sound like stories American Mommies tell their kids at night to try keep them from drinking. No one has ever come up with where, and I have seen 19 year old Americans in Vancouver bars many weekends.

The only warning I have ever heard is if you get drunk in Canada and head home when the bars close, you are now an Intoxicated Minor and can be charged in many States. Therefore if you drink in Canada, you need to have planned to at minimum stay the night.

No it isn't true.

No it is not true -- either statement. In some places in Canada the drinking age is 19, in other places its higher or lower.

However there can be some stringent rules about what sort of ID you need to drink in certain provinces. According to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario the only acceptable ID is:

1. Ontario driver's licence with a photo;

2. Canadian passport with a photo;

3. Canadian citizenship card with a photo;

4. Canadian armed forces card with a photo;

5. Liquor Control Board of Ontario BYID photo card.

so make sure you have some government issued photo ID that contains your birthdate and hope the server accepts it. If the server and/or the bar manager refuses to accept your ID, then you're not drinking in that establishment.

age limits are not nearly as enforced in Canada as it is in the states. the 21-for-Americans is an urban legend probably originated by US authorities to try to stem the flow of young cross-border drinking.

Not true...the drinking age is set by where you are, not where you are from. In Canada drinking ages are provincial. Manitoba and Quebec have 18 as their drinking age, the rest of the country is 19. (that's why so many Canadians go to the USA when they are 21 to drink...since that is the American drinking age, and why so many 18 year olds from North Dakota/Minnesota come up to Manitoba to party)

In Manitoba the drinking age is 18 - if you have a photo ID, you should have no problem.

Nowhere in Canada is there a 21-for-Americans law; as long as you meet the age requirements to possess/consume alcohol in the province you are in, you can drink. The drinking age is currently 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec and 19 in all other provinces/territories. I even have a 20-year-old friend who recently took a trip to Ontario (legal age 19), and she said she got served.

im not sure. but the drinking age in canada is different depending on what province u are in. in quebec its 18, but i think in most provinces its 19

Explorer
thats a fairy tale.
19 is the legal age here

Bren
it depends where in Canada you're going...Alberta is still 18...Ontario is 21, BC is 19...
no to the US question
