I live in California. I want to move to Canada. Preferably Montreal. What are the best ways to find work? |
So the thing is, I am a web designer and I just got layed off, and my wife is pregnant. We are kind of sick of the States right now, with the economy in shambles, greedy companies, etc etc. Canada is no magical land, but hey, they do have a better health care system and daycare is practically free. So we wanna move there. But what is the best way?
* register with temp agencies there?
* move there first, then try & find work while there?
* pay a headhunting service for placement, if such exists?
Any ideas are welcome. We are in a pretty dire situation and as I said I don't want to look for here anymore...I just don't trust American companies, especially right now. Too many hiring freezes, too many layoffs. Thanks. |

It will most likely take you years to get into Canada. If you find someone to hire you, they will have to prove that no one else in the country could do that job. As for temp agencies, or any job, you need a social insurance number. Can't get that until you're a resident. The web design field is saturated here, anyway.
Moving to Canada is no walk in the park. |

There are a couple places in Canada you should consider. The one clsoest to cali is the Vancouver area. There are a lot of IT jobs here and climate wise easier to take then rest of Canada. Vancouver is sort of slightly chiller version of San Francisco with mild but wet winters and great sunny, humid free summers.
To gain temp or permnant residency check out http://www.cic.gc.ca for info. You have to get a job lined up before you apply for visa and you have to apply from outside the country. With your IT skills you should be able to find something.
Try http://www.vancouverjobshop.ca
or
http://www.monster.ca
The other high tech hub in canada is outside Ottawa Ontario (Kanata)
Couple things; tho, yes health insurance is universal everywhere in canada and everyone (incl. landed immigrants and permanent residents) and everything medical is covered BUT some provinces like here in BC we pay a $108/month healthcare premium per family (no max on kid numbers and its cradle to grave no maximum and no limitations or pre-existing condiiton nonsense))/. just so you know. It doesnt cover dental or drug costs.
Also, daycare programs are spotty across the country. In Quebec they have subsidized daycare and its cheap but in other areas and here in BC childcare costs for full time toddler can be $40/day so no illusions there.
Ideally, if you worked in kanata and lived close by in like Hull, Quebec (not a huge commute) ..you would get free healthcare (no fees there) and low cost daycare. You'll find Ontraio winters long from a California point of view.
Its about a 19 hour drive from LA to Vancouver. |

if you are looking for work more then anything, perhaps you might want to consider Calgary instead. Calgary is dying to get people to work. Your chances to find work in Montreal will be slim compared to western canada

i'd start contacting companies in the area. Silicon Valley North is 2 hours away in Ottawa, where you would probably have better luck as all the major tech companies are here. You should be able to find a job before you ever come here as it's a limited number of qualified candidates for most of the jobs here. |

I would look at www.workopolis.com or www.monster.ca the good thing is your're web designergner so you can probably get a good job.
I would look for something online first to get some ideas before moving there.
You can try placement agencies as long as they give you something within your career because they tend to sometimes give dumb telemarketing jobs try manpower.
Canada is a great place to live but in Montreal I here there's a lot of snow! You can also try British Columbia or even Toronto. |

Thanks to the internet you can find a job online before coming here. My favorite web site is http://jb-ge.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/Intro_en.aspx there are many different types of placement agencies that are designated to tech positions.
I would recommend learning French if your choice of location in Montreal. It is a beautiful city with a great history and wonderful people.
We do have a awesome health care system but we do pay alot more taxes then the states. Daycare is not practically free, but we do have funding for people who do not have the salary for child care.
The housing market at the moment in any large city Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal is at a large and is very expensive.
I have visited the States and I consider Canada a magical land. The reason for you wanting to move to Canada because you think everything is free, it's not we do fork out allot.
Don't be surprised when you have to wait 7 to 12 hours in emergency to see a doctor because of our so called free health care. I suggest doing your research. |

Montreal is a French speaking city (some people speak English but predominantly French); for Americans, it is better to move to other cities like Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa or Calgary.
You'd got more technical answers if you had posted this on Y!A immigration section. |
