If America's economy goes to ****, ours probably will too, I am afraid. I don't really know if it is safer in Canada. I have traveled a lot in the States recently, and have been surprised to learn guns aren't as big as everyone makes it out to be down there. But, I think there is a larger disparity in wealth down there which can lead to more crime (but remember there is 10x the people).
I have a friend up here who is from California. She crossed the border telling them she was 'just visiting' and now she has been here for a couple of years. I think once you are here for 3 years, you can apply to immigrate. If you have education, it is even easier. Go to the Immigration Canada website for more info.
Also, stay on the west coast. It is booming right now (esp. Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver).

First, Canada has to give you permission to immigrate to there or else you'd be an illegal immigrant. It isn't cheap and you will either need a job before you go or enough to cover 6 months of living expenses.

Check out Citizenship and Immigration Canada's Website for all the details:

I'm American & love my country very much, I moved to Canada and it's not as easy as YOU might think.
http://cic.gc.ca is the place to start. If you want any helpful tips just ask me.

I understand you don't like the U.S., but Canada is very cold. The winter starts about Halloween and ends right about Easter. I not talking 60's, I mean like 20's and 30's and that is during the day. If you think you can handle it, I would suggest you go up there for a week long visit, before you make your final decision.

first you better hope we want you... no offence. if you dont have any skills or education your probably not gonna get in. but if you are skilled in a trade, or if ur a docter, or a very good business owner then you'll get in for sure. how do you make a transition? well, you have to decide where you wanna live, what tempature you like, and what your career is going to be.
