I live in Canada, and I wanted to know if I needed a passport to enter the USA?
I want to go see my boyfriend and his family in Finlay,Ohio. Last year I went to New York and entered just fine with my Birth Certificate. I wanted to know if I could still enter with my birth certificate or if I need a passport. And does he need a passport to enter Canada, or can he use his birth certificate?
As stated in a couple of the previous answers, the regulations relating to cross border travel into the US are presently as follows:
By Land: Either a valid passport OR valid government issued ID such as a drivers license and and official birth certificate.
By Sea: Same as land.
By Air: A valid passport
Effective June 1, 2009 a valid passport will be required for all travel into the US.

If you are driving or traveling via land you will require your original birth certificate as well as government issued photo id such as drivers license, it is expected to change June 1/2009 though to having to present a passport for all modes of travel.
If you are flying you will need a passport.
Same rule apply for your boyfriend to enter Canada he will need original birth certificate and government issued photo id for land travel. '
For air travel he will need a passport.
It is strongly recommended that all citizens of both Canada and the United States carry passports when crossing the U.S. / Canada border
However, Effective January 31, 2008 U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers will no longer accept oral declarations of U.S. or Canadian citizenship from those traveling by land or sea.
U.S. and Canadian travelers will be required to present:
(1) A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license and (2) A birth certificate or other proof of citizenship;

yes i drove to buffalo last week and i was asked to provide my passport at the border which i thought was a little bit unusual bcoz they never asked for it before...but yeah i think it would be wise to have it on you, just in case...911 has indeed caused a lot of changes...
