I m gonna live in Montreal but I can' t speak english very well, will it be a problem ? |
I m a french citizen and I ll relocate to Montreal very soon in a couple of month. I heard that Montreal is mainly inhabited by english speakers and that french is barely used in public.
My skills in english are pretty weak , especially when it is about listening and speaking english, my writing is better though, moreover I won' t have much time to work on my english over there.
Do you think I will be mistreated by english speakers because I heard that there is such a hate towards french canadian and french speakers, it that true ?
Sorry for my bad english.
Additional Details Thanks for all your answers and for being so nice , it ll be my first time in Canada so that' s why I am a little bit scared, new atmosphere new world. I did not know what to expect.

WOW
non ce n'est pas un problème...
On a besoin d'immigrants francophones!

Montreal is a fully French speaking city - you won't have any problems at all. I visit Montreal quite a lot and I have never experienced any problems there and I'm a native English speaker who speaks French pretty well, but I'm not fluent. I've never had any problems with anyone, its a great city and easy to fit in. |

Montreal is a french based city in the province of quebec. The thing about montreal is that it's very diverse, which is the reason why sometimes we have language barriers. However, there are parts of the city that are more french and other parts that are more english. If you look at the big pictures, montreal is very bilingual. There's not much hate towards one another, however it's a bit normal that each feel strongly about there roots. |

Your English is very good. You WILL NOT have a problem speaking only French in Montreal as French is the dominant language of the city. The stories you hear about intolerance between the French and English speaking residents is grossly overstated. You will be OK.
Bon chance! |

The only ones who may mistreat you are those who would mistreat anyone anyway. Please don't lump all English speaking Canadians in the same pile. There is no hatred towards French Canadians. Whoever told you that was just plain wrong!
As for getting along in Montreal with limited English, from what I've seen, I'd say your English skills are quite good. You shouldn't have any problems whatsoever getting by in Montreal. |

Whoever told you french is barely used in public probably lives in the the West-Island, Dorval, or Kirkland area of the city. That's where most English Montrealers live. Besides most are bilingual. There is not much french- english hatred. On or about St-Laurent street and eastwards are more French speaking such as Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Plateau Mont-Royal, Ville-Marie.
