I took a lesson about Canada, and i have a few questions?...? |
Okay, read this passage first,
' There are many different native people throughout Canada like the Crees, Mohawks, "Iroquois" and "Sioux". In the north of the country, the "Inuit" now have a self governing homeland called "Nunavut" meaning our land. It is over two million sq km and is inhabited by 17500 "Inuits".
..... Well, i need the right way to pronounce the words between the quotation marks. Please!!! |

Ok, for "Iroquois" you pronounce it like "ear-o-cwas"
"Sioux" is like "See You"
"Inuit" is like "IN- U- IT"
"Nunavut" is like "NONE- A- VIT"
Hope this helps!!
Good luck! :) |

The others gave good pronunciations but there are a couple of small changes I want to suggest.
People from the North pronounce things a bit different then we who live down south do. Nunavut is pronounced as "new-na-voot" and Inuit is pronounced as "in-oo-eet". The difference in the way the words get pronounced is due to the fact that those up north are more familiar with how they pronounce the words of their language better then we are in the south. |

I'm just going off what I remember from History twelve:
Iroquois = Ear-Oh-Kwah
Sioux =Sue
Inuit = In-you-it (how southerners say it) In-ew-it (northerners)
Nunavut = None-a-vit or None-a-vut (south) or New-na-vuut (north) |

Well if you truly want to know about first nations people then try not to call them bye the colonialists names.The Sioux are known as the Lakota,Nakota and Dakota.The Iroqouis and Mohawks are part of the Six Nations.As for the Cree that is fairly common name for us.However we refer to ourselves as the Nehiwanak or the "true people".I suppose most people do not mind being called Cree or Sioux or Mohawks just know that they are names given to us bye the Europeans.hope that helps |
