Alrighty....
Ottawa... is pretty big... now that it's all amalgamated.. it is pretty big... cost of living is by far CHEAPER in the outlining areas of Ottawa.. if you are looking to live in Ottawa ( aka Downtown-West end- Center town ) it's really $$$$ ( mls.ca) but if you go a little further out... let's say eastwards.. Rockland or more west Stittsville it's considerably cheaper... just to give you an idea... a 400,000$ home in the Ottawa area will be about
250,000-300,000$ outside of Ottawa, taxes are less too...
and all depending on what you are looking for... living on the outskirts of Ottawa might not be that bad.. Barrhaven is growing like a weed... SO many new housing developments are going up there.. but so are the costs because of its growing popularity... same with Kanata....
Embrum... is a half hour east of Ottawa... on the 417... it's a smaller community feel... very nice... quiet... but that too is growing... My friend lives there... she likes it a lot.... she is even considering investing in a house there instead of closer to the city... if you dont mind the commute then by all means... start your search outside of the city limits... it's all highway accessible and it's not a cluster of routes and over passes like major american or more industrial canadian cities ( ex: montreal )
Take a good look at www.mls.ca you'll get great ideas on pricings for the different regions around Ottawa.
Ottawa is a great place to live... i live in Rockland... small town.. but it's gotten a lot bigger and more popular over the years... still has a safe small community feel though, which is nice. and it's only a half hour away from the downtown core of ottawa ( market, parliament ect... )
Ottawa is big, but it doesn't feel BIG... you can't compare it to Montreal, Toronto or Quebec... it's more homey....
I find it safe... but like anywhere you can't take that for granted...
It's a government town...
lots of job ops here that's for sure...
and ummm seriously? you LIKE the cold!?!!?
well hate to burst your bubble but it's about 12 degrees here right now and we're a day away from December!
... ~ LOL~ but yes it does get cold here in winter... but it's still pretty cool because we have the Canal, worlds LONGEST skating rink... and Winterlude... outdoor concerts, activities, snow/ice sculptures....
there's ALWAYS a festival going on at some point.. .especially in the summer...
all in all you're making a good choice if you're thinking of moving in the region...
best of luck! |

Ottawa is a great city to move to. As it is the Capital city and the Political capital of Canada the standard of living is very good. Lots of open and park like settings, the Rideau canal in the centre of the city becomes the world's longest outdoor skating rink, lots of festivals throughout the year especially n the city, the Gatineu hills are nearby to go and see the great fall colors, Skiing and Montreal is 2 hrs away, Toronto if you ever get the need is 4-5hrs away, it is a very safe city to live in, it is cold, we get lots of snow (being in a valley we get dumped on, but cleaned up quite quickly),it's cold but no where near -30/-40°C as could be felt out West Calgary(don't care how many chinooks they get, i lived there -40 is -40°C)/Saskatchewan. Embun has cheaper house prices, you couldn't think of paying anywhere near that amount for the same size house in Ottawa
Embrun is a small city outside(East, approx 20-30 mins depending on traffic) of Ottawa,
Embrun is located in Eastern Ontario. The town is in Prescott and Russell County. The town has a population of 11,500 (2006 Estimate). Although traditionally a francophone community, in recent years the town's population is becoming more anglophone, with 40% (2005 estimate) of the population speaking English at home.
Embrun has four main housing neighbourhoods which provide a home for 90% of the town's population. These four main housing neighbourhoods are generally separated from the other, with usually only one or two streets connecting them. The town has a high senior population, with half of the population being over the age of 45. |

East of Ottawa -- which includes Embrun -- is pretty nice. EXTREMELY quiet and safe. And cheap to boot, yes. Housing prices there are spectacularly cheap compared to both Ottawa itself, and the Ottawa Valley to the west of the city.
It's a bit rural, and a bit French. Certainly not so much so that you'd need to speak it to live there comfortably, but noticeably more so than the city. There are some lovely houses out there, and some nice families. There are also little boxes with weirdos living in them. Much like anywhere else in Canada, but there seems to be a wider spread given how cheap houses are out there -- and that includes, relatively speaking, massive places on the waterfront.
If anything bad is going on in Embrun, crime or otherwise, we certainly don't hear about it in Ottawa.
Ottawa itself is very much a government town, and very Canadian.
But. Caveat: a pleasantly crisp November is just a memory in a bitter January. |

I can answer the part on Ottawa better as I have visited there. Ottawa is a beautiful city and because it is the capital of Canada there are lots of museums and cultural activities. It's a great place to live if you are bilingual in French and English, but certainly people can get by speaking only one of the official languages. It's not a cheap city, but I would say that it is not quite as expensive as Vancouver or Toronto.
I looked up Embrun on the Internet as I have never been there myself. It seems like a very small town. It looks very pretty and certainly the region around Ottawa is very beautiful. You can just Google "Embrun" and make sure to put pages from Canada in the search engine (use www.google.ca). I found a website that might be helpful: www.twp.russell.on.ca (Embrun is part of this township) Hope this is helpful. |

Cost of living in embrun is not as bad as Ottawa. It's very quiet, beautiful and not far from Ottawa. Great restaurant The Lucky seven. |

I think Ottawa is a nice city full of parks and national museums and it is increasingly bi-lingual. It does get awfully cold though - as much as 30 below (C or F) with 65km (40mph) winds some winter days.
But Ottawa is being politically torn apart right now over debating whether to build more rail transit lines. |

Ottawa is a wonderful place to move...i just moved here 4 months ago and love it!!!...The Transit system is amazing...the crime rate is low...the city is soooo clean compared to other cities and it is very multicultural....and if you have or are planning on having kids there are great universities and colleges here that give you kid a chance to save money and stay at home while stuyding... |
