I want to move to Calgary,AB oneday....but i live in southernCalifornia. Thats a big temperture change for me!

If you don't like big temperature changes, don't come here. We can get a bigger temperature span in one day than LA has had in its history.

Guess what. Take a look at the temperature today. Its like 38
celsius, which is getting well over 90 degrees. Calgary would be somehting like Nice for 8 months of the year, and only cold for 3-4 months. Arizona had worse weather than Calgary this winter!! Don't get too wrapped up in hearing about -20, -30 degrees. Its VERY DRY , so you can put on a nice winter coat and hat and you're all set. In Toronto, Like minus 5 , you freeze your *** off, because its very cold damp air

Calgary is also protected from really harsh weather by the Rocky Mountains, unlike Winnepeg, like another answerer said, where the cold winds blast across the Prairies for hundreds of miles.

Also, health care in Alberta isn't "free". A single person pays like $40 per month for basic services like a trip to the doctor,

but for prescription drug coverage, dental, and coverage for things like an ambulance trip (which will cost like $300 for be transported two blocks), you need to have anothe healh care plan, ususally through work, but you can also buy it separately.
A good plan might cost about $100 per month for 80% coverage of these types of costs. Still, I'm not sure what health care costs in the USA. You might consider these fees "free" medical care!!.

BUT, you do wait about 7-8 hours in a hospital emergency room, If you need to see a specialist, you need to be referred by a general doctor, and then have to wait 6 months for your first appointment (after that you don't wait so long).

So, its always Greener right :)

Also, you dont get your $1.60 Canadian for every $1 US anymore. its almost even !!. Like the next answere says, yes if you are buying a house, prices have tripled in the last 5 years. You can't deduct your morgage interest like you can in the US, HOWEVER, your don't pay any capital gains if your houese goes up in value. (She forgot to mention that :) )

Calgary does have its charm, but San Fran is definitely a nice interesting city, right on the ocean!! Calgary only has the Rocky Mountains!!

Drive by shooting season, highway shooting season,
gangbang season and, post office workers going beserk season. its getting pretty violent vith the gangs, but not as bad as Toronto!!

yesterday on the weather channel i saw that calgary was suppose to be 36 degrees ( celcius) next sunday
the seasons are similar to la
except in winter its much warmer
calgary and area is dry and hot in the summer
and even if its rainy, its still really humid making it warm still
in the winter alberta gets chinook winds that instintly melts the snow
chinook winds are warm winds from the west
its nice to have, the snow just melts away and its warm.

Well right now the temperature outside is plus 29 or so. Yes it does get kinda bad here for weather, but we dont usually get snow until January/February and it stays generally until about March with the occasional snow fall after that.

You can't beat living 45 minutes from several hand-fulls of jaw-dropping hikes, beautiful forests and scenery. Banff and Canmore are amazing to visit.

Yes our health care does cost about $40 a month, but I have not waited in an emergency waiting room for over 45 minutes anytime that I've gone to a certain hospital. Only when I've gone to the Peter Lougheed have I had to wait a ridiculous wait a few times, so now I dont go there!!

Just make sure that when you move here you have a place to stay when you arrive, dont try to just find one when you land here because you probably wont. We're in a really big oil-field boom right now so housing is harder to find and more expensive. But it is pretty close to the same for housing in the average LA.

My husband and I moved from Calgary to San Francisco in 2001. We really enjoy the weather and the culture in California. We'll never want to move back to Calgary. Not only the weather is cold in winter, but sometimes it's also cold in summer. The taxes are higher than CA, but yes, you got a relatively cheap health care from the provincial government. But there is a catch, when my mom was sicked, she was waited in the emergency room for over 8 hours without anyone took care of her. When I made an appointment to see my regular doctor, I often needed to wait for over an hour and even 2 hours. Our health care in Califonria was paid by our employer, and we got the best health care in here. Take an example, my girl friends in Calgary told me they only allowed to have one ultra sound during their pregnancy. Their children also not allowed to see pediatrians unless they were referred by their GP. But when I told them I have 8 ultra sounds in here when I was pregnant, and I got to choose any pediatrians I want in CA. That's make me know although in US you paid a higher price in health care, you got a better system in here.

I also need to mention in Calgary, the real estate market was triple in the last 5 years. The house market is crazy, and you literally needs to pay California housing price in Calgary. Which make us realize we'll never move back to Calgary again. Also, you can't deduct your mortgage interest and property taxes in your tax return, which means higher income taxes for you to live there.

I wouldn't recommend anyone from California to move to Calgary unless you got an awesome and well pay job.

I lived in Alberta once and moved to San Jose. The biggest thing I noticed was the mosquitos and dryness of Canada. Climate wise I really prefered San Jose, but also, Canada has alot to offer.E.i. : Good candy(how can the americans live without Aero Bars!), free health care for everyone, excelent camping and maple syrup. The list goes on and on. Though be ready for some huge taxes. The healthcare has to come from someone.

what a delimma?!? try this, go to the ocean, dive in and cool off, and think hard about ur desire to move to calgary bcas if u want to do the same in calgary, the ocean is 12 hours away.

move to sf or northern california if u want better climate.

try living in Winnipeg buddy. You never really get used to the cold. You just learn to deal with it.
