Hey You! |
I want to move to Canada. What can I expect there? |
As gay atheist who's interesting in graphic design, people tell me this is the best place for me. Is it true? If you live there or been there before, what more can you tell me? Is there anything shockingly different than my life in Texas? Aside from the obvious climate/geographic differences? Additional Details Haha Z, no one goes shooting people people in Texas. Most people have guns though but that's more for hunting and just in case of burgularies... which hardly happeen but yeah. |

depends where you go. I am atheist never had a problem with that....I have many friends whoa re gay and never had problems. There are still some people out there that are homophobic but canada in general is very accepting. you can even get married here! |

1. Canadians don't run around shooting people. We're not insane gun freaks that live in a deluded shoot-'em-up-cheesy-Western-movie world.
2. We don't shove religion down people's throats. We're a lot more spiritually secure than that! That's not to say we don't have right wing fascist nutcases here, just that we don't have nearly as many of 'em.
If you want to move to Canada, however, please be advised that it isn't a simple matter of wanting to move here. In other words, you can't just show up here and move in because you can't. You have to apply to immigrate from inside your home country and be prepared to wait a long time. We're currently dealing with about 980,000 applications already. As we only accept about 250,000 new immigrants each year, you can see what kind of time it will take for any new prospective immigrants. |

You should travel up and have a look, especially in winter.
In the mean time, here's the immigration information. It may take at least a year:

Compared to Texas, for you , Canada will be "the promised land ".
To explain. We are not nearly as religiously obsessed , and we are certainly more gay friendly. Our human rights legislation assures that you will be treated fairly, and with respect here.
We are more tolerant.

what might be shockingly different is no one cares if your a gay atheist. Knock your self out. You can get married, have full partner privileges and live your life like any other member of society
what a concept. |

What a difference! We are definitely not religiously based, and we are much more gay friendly. You should try Montreal! Very culturally diverse and large gay community. The village is absolutely gorgeous in the summer. It becomes pedestrian only and there are always things going on :) |

We run those who are not normal out of town. And as a G man, you are not welcome. |

If you move to Canada, as an American citizen, you will have to put up with people like Z and Jim B. Most Canadians hate Americans with a passion (that’s some most Americans don’t know) and if they find out you're from the US, you'll have hell to pay. You will suddenly become the spokesperson for the USA, you will be asked why you voted for George Bush, you will be asked questions like "Why are Americans all racist?" and generally, you will be treated like dirt. Now, if you hate the USA, and you want to move to a place where hating Americans is a daily ritual, then by all means, move to Canada. Four years was enough for me. I moved back to the United States in 2006.
Take the time to read this article, it’s very interesting:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A15638-2004Nov26.html
I'm not telling you to not move there. If you really want to move there, then do it, but remember that Canada isn't utopia. It will be expensive to move there, the taxes are higher, and for the record, they don't have "free health care", it's paid for through high taxes (yet their health system still has major flaws that is never reported on the media).
Keep this in mind ... "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". |
