if you live in Ontario, Canada then your fine you don't need a passport. but like if you somewhere else you need a passport to cross the border(s) |

I live in Windsor, Ontario, and cross the Canadian/American border frequently.
At present, for a U.S. citizen making a land crossing, the following documentation is required:
(1) government issued photo ID (such as your driver's licence), and
(2) your original birth certificate,
not one of the other but both.
The stipulation requiring the passport comes into effect Jun 1st, 2009, although some States (such as Michigan) are going with the enhanced driver's licence, or the passport "card" as well. Keep in mind that only a passport book will allow you to travel on international flights. These other options soon to be available are strictly for land crossings.
If your trip is scheduled to end before June 1st, you should have no trouble with the (1) and (2) documents I cited above.
Have fun.
BTW, in case you're travelling with any minors in the car, you should be aware that they cannot cross without signed declations from their parents allowing them to cross the border. |

It depends on where you're from. If you're not from Canada or the USA then yes. If you are from the USA it gets tricky. The government around here is trying to create blocks "for our safety", and you need an expanded drivers' license or a passport to get up there; though they keep changing the date when you have to have this by. If you're not going before June 09, then you'll need the passport, but if you're going before then you should be okay with just the birth certificate. |

only a birth certificate or drivers license until june 1st. than a passport is required. |

No, just a birth certificate if you are a US citizen. |

Yes, if you're an US citizen. Going anywhere outside the US requires a passport and/or a birth certificate. |
