If Canada is so Great, then Why? |
Are Talented and Ambitious Canadians rushing to the US. Pick up any book on Canada's culture and this is what you would read, that ambitious and career minded Canadians would rather move to the US than contribute to Canada's economy.
Canada has a huge brain drain to other countries.
So many Comedians and actors would rather go to the US then, contribute to their own TV and film industry. Canadians complain about the overwhelming influence of American culture but don't bother supporting their own television shows and movies. In fact the only reason a Canadian actor has not moved to the US is because there is no job offer in the US.
Your own actors and directors can't be bothered to go back to Canada to contribute to Canada's tv and film industry. The award winning director of American film Crash made a film about the American people, he has yet to make any film about Canada. Most Canadian actors don't even talk much about Canada.
In fact most people don't even know some American celebrities are actually Canadian and these celebrities don't even keep in touch with what is going on in Canada.
So why is Canada so great when everybody who is anybody is living outside of Canada? Additional Details So most of the answers so far are stating that job opportunities are fewer in Canada, then why doesn't the Canadian government do something about it.
No I don't think job opportunities are fewer, it is Canadians would rather live and work elsewhere and hence the fewer job opportunities.
The brain drain in Canada is so bad, California has a bigger GDP than Canada. |

Lol, actors, comedians and so forth make a country great, having superb movies come from Canada makes a country great? You are so naive it is ridiculous! These actors move to the US because more acting jobs are available to them not because it's better. That's like saying why are most movies shot in Canada is it because it looks better and the US is ashamed of their ugly country? (I don't think it's ugly just making a point.)
Anyways actors and whatever don't make a country great, that is one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard.
Instead of focusing on a great country like Canada why don't you focus on the huge financial crisis your country is in. :]
Ohh and last time I checked a lot of famous Canadians are extremely proud of their country. The only reason why some Americans don't realize they are Canadians is because they are all wrapped around the US being "number 1" or maybe they have lives and don't waste their time on media and crap like that, because well famous people aren't that important. |

as someone who has changed countries its the grass is greener somewhere else. There are millions of people in my old country who are happy to live there and they have an illegal immigrant problem like the US has, but people still live there and don't even think of moving. There are people who are always willing to move and find opportunity elsewhere. The US & Canada were founded on that principle.
As for the GDP of California why shouldn't it be as large as Canada's they have the same population size. |

As an American, I'll give you the short answer to this question.
There are things that can be bought and sold very quickly. These include companies, stocks, jobs paying well above par, gadgets, fashion clothes, anything material. This drives people to the USA who live in the immediate.
There are things that CANNOT be bought nor sold. That is the heritage and folk roots of the Canadian locals and hodgepodge immigrants who develop an attachment to the land and the soil and all its strife. It is what it is, but 100 years, 500 years, 50,000 years go by and the fossils and bones beneath the prairie soil remains intact unchanged and Canadian culture is long-term, it never was profitable, never will be, but will be the last entity to ever disappear on the earth. I guess it's like the native peoples who were here before all of us.
So consider Canada something of a priceless element.
For example, try to search online for photographs of Prince Albert National Park in Northern Saskatchewan, it is BEAUTIFUL, soooo breathtaking I was there, there's no ads for it, it's not profitable, but what the heck is profit??? |

Canada is the est place in the orld to liv. When I lived in Canada, I wanted for no material goods, there were never any gas shortages and the air and water was always clean.
However, once Canadian companies get above a certain size, they usually get bought up by Americans and the best jobs get moved to the USA. And the ones that don't get bought, expand into the far larger US market, eventually moving the top jobs to where the money is.
As an electronics engineer all I could ever get were jobs with smaller companies and doing lower work.
Now that I live in LA, I do world class work, products I design are used all around the world. When I go to a trade show, I see people from Europe, Australia and many other countries where we know each other by name. I am only making a bit more money but it feels really goo to know that it was my amplifiers powering the basketball arena at the Olympics. That the Muslims at Mecca will following prayers through 250 amplifiers I designed. And many more. The tourists at Heliopolis in Egypt will be listening through my electronics.
And the southern tier tates got a better deal on weather than Canada did.
However, when I retire I will likely be going back to Vacouver. |

First of all.. the state of California has a larger population than Canada does... so of course they would have a larger GDP.
I think some knowledge of a market economy will answer your questions.
The only industries where there seems to be a "brain drain" revolve around the arts (acting, painters, etc), and the medical industries. So would you really consider wacko actors and actresses moving to the United States a threat to our intellectual integrity in Canada?
I'm sure if you looked into other industries you may even see the reverse... Americans coming here. Primarily in Oil and Diamond mining. |

Perhaps you should site some examples of which celebrities "don't even keep in touch with what is going on in Canada," and whom ignorant people assume are american? I would not like nor support a government who cared more about the film industry of Canada, then social issues facing its people. Its not an important subject. Us Canadians do not want to turn our beautiful country into the fake, plastic atmosphere of Hollywood, and your other celebrity entrenched cities. You can keep your paparazzi, "red carpet premieres" and gossip rags that are a waste of paper. I love my Canada the way it is, silicone and Paris Hilton free. And on that note, by all means, keep Pamela Anderson. |

First of all, in specialized industries, one goes where the work is. Logic 101
Secondly, what Canadians in Hollywood are denying their Canadian connection? All the ones I know about are quite proud of their origins as we are proud of their success. Perhaps Americans treat celebrities the way they do everything else - know what you want to know and ignore everything else.
Thirdly, I repeat what someone ahead of me asked. If Canada is so awful, why are so many Americans trying to get in here?
Anyone who bases their knowledge of the world on what they read in the scandal sheets and movie magazines is a pretty shallow person. |

A lot are drawn by better weather and, in the past, the value of the US dollar versus the Canadian dollar.
As far as actors go, the US is the TV and film capital of the English speaking world. They go there because that's where the work and money are. |

Canada does not have a Hollywood style city or industry. Nor does it have a bunch of crazy paparazzi. We Canadians are perfectly happy with that. |

"No I don't think job opportunities are fewer, it is Canadians would rather live and work elsewhere and hence the fewer job opportunities."
There is a problem with the above statement. It would have been more accurate had you just written,
"No I don't think." |

Please, do not expect the "government to do something about it." Last time I checked, the government's job was not to create jobs in the television industry.
Still, I agree that the Canadian government can at least try to promote film and television production here but it would work much better if citizens voted with their wallets. |

There are lots of Canadian actors who contribute to Canadian film and television.
You really need to get a clue. Why is it our problem that you don't know which celebrities are Canadian? In the end it really doesn't matter anyway. They do what they love. It really doesn't matter to us where they live. |

Canada is a wonderful and beautiful country. However, in terms of business and economics, the States have more to offer than us. So everyone goes there. |
