You get the right to be proud of your genetic background. You have a responsibility to make your genetic ancestors and those still living proud of you, both Native and otherwise. And as any decent Canadian of any background can tell you, that is not by asking for a handout. If you have a need to hear the same thing from a Native Source, there are many , many successful Natives around - seek them out. They almost all have web sites with a contact us page and the Natives I know would be very happy to help you out in this regard.
It is unfortunate that some of what *ajidamoon*~ says is the way it is, especially in Eastern Canada. That does not mean you need to buy into the idea that Natives are second class. Being second class is a state of mind in many ways. Those are the ways to initially attack that entire mind set among other Canadians. When you change the mindset of others, it becomes easier to change the laws and legislation. If you doubt that, you really need to take a look at some of the tribes out west who have basically ignored the stereotype and moved up to be just as successful and proud of that success as anyone. They do not act like second class citizens and they do not think like second class citizens. They are not second class citizens.
I am reminded of a black lady in the U.S. - Rosa Parks - who back in 1955 decided she was not going to be a second class citizen any more and started acting like a first class one. It took time, but she changed, with that one decision, the course of American history. Changing one's perceived class starts with individuals in their own minds, not governments. Since you are looking for a handout based on your blood lines, you are a pretty low excuse of a human being, regardless of bloodlines. You are not kind or realistic or decent or smart. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. |

No because you don't have First Nations status. |

No, in order to "get anything" such as being treated like a second class citizen, sub standard living conditions, discrimination from your own government and all new low levels of poverty, you need to be first, second or third generation, be able to prove it, and apply for Status Rights.
Like a previous poster stated, get an education and a job.
The little that Natives do get does not need to be shared with those looking for a free ride. |

Yeah you get a free computer. Just kidding. No you don't get squat unless you are registered as a member of a band. I am a quarter. My Mom's side is 100 percent Metis and I don't get anything for that except my culture and history and genes. |

You could probably get a few scholarships if you applied for them. But just about anyone can get scholarships if they apply. |
