If I own a couple of handguns, could I take them with me to Canada?

Just wondering.

Don't listen to those other dummies. In Canada, handguns are only allowed 10 round magazines, otherwise you are allowed to tansport, shoot and hunt in Canada with the proper licences.

Assuming you're American, I'll include a link that will provide links to the loads of paperwork (.pdf) required to get the licences. It's really quite a process that will take some time.

As you can see by some of the answers you are getting, Canada is not very tolerant of guns. I think that it ranks up there with people smoking in a public place, and using your cell phone while behind the wheel.

If you are coming to Canada for a visit (not moving here), you can get a permit to bring the weapon into Canada, but there are several forms to fill out, and you have to transport the firearm under strict regulations, such as having the gun in a locked case, the ammunition must be in a separate case, and I think you may even need a trigger lock.

And I am not sure thatt he regulations apply to ALL guns. I know that hunters come up here with rifles and these are allowed. Handguns may be a different story altogether.

Canada is quite a safe place compared to some US cities, so there should not be any need for a handgun. You would never get a permit for carrying a handgun here unless perhaps you are in law enforcement, so carrying the gun on your person or in the car in a fireable state for use in an emergency situation (carjacking, animal attack, etc) would be illegal.

I heard somewhere that over 70% of the handguns that wind up in the hands of criminals in Canada are the result of being smuggled in from USA, or stolen from careless owners during a break-in of their homes or vehicles. Which is why it evokes such nasty responses from many Canadians who answer these questions.

So my advice to you would be to leave the guns at home, or check with the border crossing you will be taking to enter Canada and see if they offer storage of your firearm while in Canada. And obviously if you are flying here, I would be 99% sure that the airline will not allow the firearm on the plane.

Your best to leave them at home. handguns are a restricted weapon in Canada and there are lots of permits and hoops you would have to go through to bring them in legally but you don't want to run the risk of bringing them in without the permits.

You must remember that even though America and Canada share the same land mass we are two separate countries and have different laws.

Please leave your guns at the border. Canada is not the 'Wild West'.

thinkingtime
No.

Your guns would be confiscated at the border. You have no right or permission to carry a gun in Canada.
