If I use my atm card in British Columbia, Canada, will it take out American dollars or Candadian? |
Right now the exchange rate it 1.2. So, if I actually exchange 1000 dollars of American money, I get 1,200 Canadian money back. But, if I simply use a debit card, will it take the Canadian value away or American? Damn this is difficult. Basically, will I lose 1.2% of my money just because of an exchange rate? And therefore should I exchange my money for Canadian to get "free" money, or the extra money because of the exchange rate? |

I disagree with first answerer. My experience is that ATMs always give the best available exchange rate...just like going to the bank. They will give you Canadian dollars at the current to the moment exchange rate since they are directly connected to the bank. |

The ATM will give you Canadian dollars and give you and exchange rate that is probably not in your favor. You'll see the rate once you get the bill.
I would exchange US for Canadian wherever I can get the best rate and get money at the ATM only when absolutely necessary. |

You can actually withdraw US dollars at some ATM in BC, Canada. The 1.2% exchange rate is a bit overrated. |

Think about what you're saying. ATM machines cannot spit out American dollars and British pounds and Euros and Taiwan dollars and Korean won and Japanese yen and Mexican pesos, and Chinese RMB, and Malaysian Ringit and Indian rupees, in response to whereever the user's ATM card was issued. Banks give a fair exchange rate, and dispense Canadian dollars. You will not be ripped off, or lose your currency advantage. If you ask the machine for CAD $120, it will spit it out and your American account will be deducted $100. |

The ATM will give you Canadian money, so as you say, if you take 1200 CAD out of an ATM, your account back home will be down $1000. I don't know what you mean with the 1.2%. The ATM will charge you something for using it, but it will give you a better exchange rate than you'll get by using US money in a store. Credit cards also give good exchange rates. Your choice; go to your bank and get all the cash you'll need before you go, or use an ATM and pay a little for the convenience and safety of not carrying around a huge amount of cash. |

you will be charged an exchange fee when you use your debit card, but it is still a better deal using an atm than exchanging it somewhere else. i do it all the time. |

It will give you Canadian money and I believe whatever the exchange rate for the day that particular ATM allows. You will definitely do better going to an ATM at a bank then private ones you see in bars, night clubs and various other places.
When I go to the US and use my ATM, it gives me US dollars at whatever their exchange rate is. |
