If a Canadian person speaks french to a French person..?

is there a big/noticeable difference in their accent?
I'm thinking of going on exchange to Canada while learning French but worried of dialects etc.

I am French Canadian and I work each day with French from France and we have no problem at all understanding each other.

Of course we have some expressions that differ but it's not a communication barer.

If you travel in smaller communities whether it's in Quebec or in France then yes, the accents and expressions change from village to village.

Lets not forget the education and economical level of the person you will be communicating with. If you go in the poor part of Montreal or the poor part of Paris they will have a very poor French, vocabulary and sentence structures, even I would have a problem understanding their mumbling.

If you want to be completely immersed in a good French environment with no English influence my suggestion is Quebec City. Montreal is a very nice city but everyone is bilingual and when they`ll see you struggle to speak French they will switch to English to accommodate you.

There is a big difference from Parisienne French, and Quebecois french, and Acadian French.

French from France who come to Quebec buy a special book to be able to understand the slang French that the Quebecois use.

If you're from France and you are talking about your children you might say (mes gus) which in Quebec you would be talking about your testicles.

So it would be important to obtain the book and you shouldn't have a problem.

I'll put it into perspective for you...

Imagine a rural Texan with a deep Southern accent speaking with a Posh Londoner.... and then times that by ten....

that is the difference between Joaul Quebecois and Parissian accents.

Justin
There may be a slight difference but nothing that differs so much to the point of French people not being able to understand Quebecois and the dialect is the same

I learned French from my Parisian accented mother and that was my accent for years until I moved to the Caribbean... then, after 2 years of living there, I had a hard time communicating when I moved to France... and THEN I married a FRENCH CANADIAN and I almost could not understand her at first.. for the first week I knew her, we had to actually WRITE NOTES to each other because of our accents. Is that FUNNY or what?

I live in the Caribbean about 7 months each winter and encounter a lot of French speaking people. I still have a problem with the Canadians... I can communicate with them, but I have to THINK about what they are saying.

I also speak Spanish and I have a hard time with the accents from GUATAMALA... they have a terrible accent unlike the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean islands

Of course there is a difference in accent.

There is also a noticeable difference in how English is spoken in Boston and in Rural Georgia, but we all understand each other.

I don't think that there is much differance.

There is a massive difference in the French of France and the French of Quebec..Quebec French has been stagnant since 1763 while France's French has continued evolving..By the way you are best staying in Quebec and outside of Montreal if you want to learn French . There is very little French spoken in Canada beyond Quebec & a small part of New Brunswick's borders.

no not at all. I spoke French in Canada and they understood me at all.

theres a difference between quebec french and french from france in the accent and some words in the language, but its not very much, although the accent is a bit hard to understand at first but if you go to places like montreal and the person you are interacting with notices a non-quebec accent or non-french accent, then they automatically switch to english a lot of the time, but french still dominates, which makes for good practice.
