You currently just need to show "proof of citizenship" to travel between Canada and the USA by ground or sea. Your military ID + US driving license will probably be OK, but you should check with the State Department (www.state.gov) and the Canadian Embassy in Washington (or the consulate nearest to you) to be certain. I would expect your military ID + US driving license + your social security card would do it.

It's still okay for the time being, but starting in 2008 you will need a passport.

The regulations apply to entering the US, not Canada. And if you are going by road, you are good with picture ID until the end of this year. In 2008, US authorities will require a passport before you can enter the country - even if you are a US citizen.

NO you must now have a passport to enter in either direction.

Check with border patrol - I do believe to re-enter the US a passport is now required. And you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate to apply for a passport if you do not currently have one. Once you have the birth certificate, when you apply for a passport - you can pay an extra fee to have the application for passport processed within two weeks. Otherwise - you are looking at a time frame of 6-8 weeks for the State department to process the passport application.

I believe they just changed the law, and only a passport will do. Google it
