If i'm denied a work visa can i still visit canada?

Hi all
I'm american and am thinking about applying for a temporary work visa to canada for the summer (i already have a potential job). what worries me is that if i were denied my visa (for whatever reason) i wouldn't be allowed to cross the border. I plan on going to canada (by car) regardless of whether or not i'll be working. does anyone know if a visa denial restricts you from entering the country as a tourist?
Additional Details
i realize that i don't need a visa to visit (and yes i have a passport) but i guess maybe i'm assuming they would keep track of who's applying for visas and who's entering the country in such a way that if someone, like myself, applied for a work visa, was denied and then entered the country anyway it would raise questions as to what i was doing there....since i obviously wanted to work & can't legally do so at this point.......thanks for the input!!

No. Just because you are denied a work visa doesn't mean you can't come in as a tourist. As long as you don't have some sort of criminal record you shouldn't have any problems at all. Enjoy Canada!

I see what you mean, having been questioned rather closely by US border people since the work I was doing in Canada at the time was easily transferrable to the US, and paid better there too. If the work visa falls through, I don't see how they can deny you entry as a visitor providing you don't have something dreadful on your record. But, since who knows how closely they keep track of this stuff, I would make sure to bring to the border crossing enough paperwork to show that you in fact have enough money and/or room on your credit cards to pay for your stay in Canada. If you're flying, have your return ticket booked and paid for and with you.

you should be able to....i dont think you will have to....when my sister and brotherinlaw went to canada, i dont even think they needed a passport....

jenny
No you should still be fine. They're two different things.

...unless you are denied a visa because of a criminal record or such, in which case you can't cross the border anyway.
