There are multiple Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties or MLATs in place between Canada and the US. The MLATs allow for the cross border enforcement of subpoenas and other court documents/orders between Canada and the US. People often don't realize that a Judge in Ontario Canada can issue a warrant for a US address tied in with a crime in Canada and that Canadian police can take that Canadian search warrant to a Judge in the US area where the house is, the US judge will confirm (endorse) the Canadian warrant and the Canadian police will be able to knock on a door in the US and legally conduct a search.

The bottom line is, if you get a subpoena from the US Court you are obliged to adhere to it. If you don't then US authorities could come after you or if nothing else put out a bench warrant and when/if you go back to the US it will be waiting for you. Under the US system I don't know who pays for your expenses if you receive a subpoena. Here in Canada if you receive a Canadian subpoena as a witness then the Court pays your fees.

if you got a subpoena from the state of michigan and moved to canada..yes you will have to appear in court..
you will b responsible for the hotel bill and other expenses..
if you dont show up then the court can issue a bench warrant on you

Jayce Cameron
yes. A subpoena will mean you are being called by the law and must show up. If not they could issue a warrant for your arrest and if you are out of country you would be extradited back to yours. If it's something small you could probably get away with not showing up. Or if you have a good excuse. If yuo are simply worried about jury duty just tell them that uyou moved to canada and it isn't feasible to move/go back. If you are called for something criminal that you;ve done you should get it cleared up before moving to canada

If you move to Canada.

Do you think you can just move here like you would move across the street or something?

You can't "just move here". You have to apply to immigrate and that will take a long time and probably you would be subpoenaed by that time.

You are required to go back under the laws of Michigan. However they have to find you in order to serve you with the subpoena. Just take steps so you are not easy to find. I do not know about Michigan, but in Ontario they will cover some of your travel expenses if you are required to go to court here.
