By land and sea you do not need a passport to travel to the USA.
(it is by air that the new requirement took place January 23, 2007. Land & water crossings are affected as early as January 2008; with the option of being pushed back to June 2009)

the first answerer is wrong..as of right now all you need is a photo id,birth certificates for any minor children...if you already have a passport then bring it anyways...if you were FLYING then you need a passport....next year is when the passport requirements goes into effect for driving but even that is up for debate

Starting 1/23/07, AIR travelers will require a passport for travel from Canada to the USA. Starting January, 2008 ALL travelers will require a passport, regardless of mode of transportation.
