Depends on how you plan to travel there:
* Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

Screaming Daisy is absolutely correct. Effective 1/23/2007 you need a passport when traveling to Canada or Mexico BY AIR. Land crossings are exempt for one more year.

FeatherHead
As of Jan 23rd...yes if you are flying.

Yes...
....The requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere will begin on January 23, 2007...
There is also a spelling test.

gpatrick900
If flying by air after January 23, 2007 you will need a passport. After Jan 1st, 2008 you will either need a passport or a passcard.

Hopefully, all you will need is a passcard for land and sea except for cruises. This is supposed to be cheaper than passports.

If you work their. You will still be able to use what you have used in the past without any further ID.

No passport needed for a quick, short trip. But, If you are going to take a job and live there you'll need a work visa.
