Montreal Canadians? You better not take any more time off. LOL .(not lookin good) My brother inlaw is a BIG Canadians fan. (I bug him all the time.)
I'm an Atlantic Canadian who works as a carpenter...I get most winters off...drives me nuts. I get to look after the kids while mom works. 3 kids in 3 different directions. Lucky me...I get to do the laundry and wash dishes, do the dusting....oh ya....don't forget to water the damn plants. I'm good and ready to go back to work when it's time.

My friend did that just last year. He saved up for 3 years and took a year sabbatical. He did home improvements and worked on his hobby which is photography. He did a lot of traveling. Israel was his biggest trip. He fit in a lot of hiking and biking around the U.S. and drove himself across the country. He also kept up with his blog. I agree with the previous response -- you should of had a plan so you don't waste this opportunity that many of us don't get to do.

Taking a leave from work with out a plan is Moronic...You'd better go back to work and start making plans for the next time....

Make this the year of the selfless act. Find a charity and throw yourself into it. Make sure when the year up you can keep some commitment to them on an occasional basis.

As you discovered, sitting home doing nothing is nice ... for a week or two ... but then, you get bored and listless and antsy!

How about taking some college classes in something you are interested in? Or take up that hobby you always thought about, but just didn't have the time for. Volunteer and charity work is a fantastic suggestion ... if you like animals, volunteer for the SPCA or a local animal shelter. If you are handy with tools, check with senior services to see if you can help out some elderly and/or disabled folks with needed fixes on their homes.

Explore all the possibilities and opportunities, which are limited only by your own imagination!

Normally when people take an extended period of time off, they use that time to travel. But seeing as how you don't wish to leave Canada NOR travel in Canada, i'm not sure what you can do? You can work on a project, such as building a home or working on a project car which occupies plenty of time as a hobby. You can go do volunteer work which i'm sure is needed year round. But if i had a year off, I'd personally use it to travel.

I was actually in a similar situation. I was tired of putting the kids in daycare, going in to a job that I hated, with nothing to do, and figured they could just pay me to stay home and do the same nothing I would taking up space in an office.

The corporate world does not work this way unfortunately. So I started a home business and learned that just working a couple hours in the evenings nearly made a year's income, working full-time nearly triples it and I get to work around my children!

A home business may or may not be for you but it's definitely a way to occupy some of your time.

Hope this helps!
