If you have the choice of traveling to Canada, would you go to Toronto or Montreal? |

It really depends what you want to do. If theater, concert and entertainment is important then Toronto, if culture and history then possibly Montreal. Some of the past answers were a bit misleading, both have festivals all year long, both good restaurants and bars, both have cities underground (who really cares)and weather is good in both, in fact if you travel in winter Toronto is a little warmer with less snow. Both are big metro areas-the opposite of the rest of the country. I'm from Ottawa which is between the two cities and have visited Montreal many times and I now live in Toronto area so I know it well. If I had to choose then Montreal because it's different but Toronto is not bad either. (but many people here will tell you to visit Vancouver, Quebec City, if you want to relax go to Atlantic Canada or if like outdoors Alberta is not bad.) |

Montreal - could be biased because I live there, but have been to both cities and it just seems, especially during the summer season, there's more to see and do here. We have one festival after another in the summer.
There's also a distinctive "feel" to the city, some say "European", though markedly different than all the places in Europe I've bee, which I think is hard to find anywhere else.
With only a 5 1/2 - 6 hour drive between the cities, you may want to try to do both anyway and see which you like more yourself. |

I went to Montréal last year, but never been to Toronto, so I can't tell you which is best. HOWEVER, if I were in your position, I'd choose Montréal just because of the language. The sole fact of being surrounded by French speaking people, and signs written in French, make for a more enriching and interesting experience. And don't worry about the language barrier. It's virtually non existent because almost everyone speaks English. You will be approached in French, but upon answering in English, that's the language that'll flow.
ALSO: I think there in not a huge, abismal distance between both cities. So if you have the time, perhaps you can go to Toronto after Montréal or viceversa.
One tip: just say "Parlez vous anglais?" to ask the person if he or she speaks English.
Bon voyage! :) |

Toronto. There is a much younger and more enegetic feel about it. I've found Montreal to be a dirty city with garbage and piles of cigarette butts everywhere. |

It all depends what time of the year. I went to Montreal and Toronto, and I prefered Montreal because Toronto had some terrible weather. In Montreal there is a city under a city, and it is interesting to have a look at it. However, when I do visit Canada next time it will be in the fall, or spring. |

I like Montreal better - just because of all the history. Both are cleaner than any city in the US and have better food. |

I wouldn't even go there. I find these two cities boring.

Montreal for various reasons, beautiful city, friendly atmosphere. Kick A** bagels and cheese! World famous at that. The comedy festivals, shopping, . Put it this way. Paris in Canada. Montreal is a Canadian version of Paris. |
