Your best bet is your local bank in Canada...
exchange the money before you go... most banks in canada require you to have an account to exchange.
you will get a better deal at a bank than a currency exchange booth at a duty free shop or at the airport...
also if you use your cc in the US it will charge based on the exchange rate on the date of purchase... cc's are a nice option instead of carrying a boat load of cash...
have fun

Why don't you just go to the bank before leaving Canada?? Their is your typical exchange rate like anywhere else . Every bank in Canada will do that for you ....in the states not every bank will exchange the currency ...so if you want it to be easier I would definatly complete the exchange here
MOst banks don't even need to order it due to the fact that so many canadians travel to the states )unlike other currency where they do have to order ) at airport you can do it as well same thing applies their will be an echange rate but at the airport you sometimes find it will cost a bit more |

It depends on how you are coming in to the USA. If by car i would try to it before you get here. Exchange of Canadian money over US money you will lose your butt on the exchange. If flying in try the airport. Most airports (Larger ones) do have a exchange bank to do this. But good luck and alot |

At present the best rate is to buy US Dollar Travelers cheques. You can buy them at any [of the few] Canadian banks and at US Nationally chartered banks (be advised that many US banks are state chartered). Be aware that TD bank has an American subsidiary with offices throughout most of the American northeast, RBC has one with offices in the middle south and eastern mid-west, and BMO owns Harris Bank which is headquartered in Chicago.
DO NOT exchange at airports or at businesses. You will be charged several points extra.
Most credit cards charge a 3% fee over the exchange rate. |

Any us bank does that, one with tellers, not a drive up window or atm, but a real bank with people, still found in almost every city or town, all over the USA. |

Any airport does foreign currency exchange, your commercial banks also do currency exchange although more of those will only exchange if you are an account holder. Your best bet would be to have your bank in Canada order US currency in advance of your trip as you'll likely get a better rate and less associated fees. Also, an alternative is to use your debit card at an ATM on the same network as your bank (for example PLUS, STAR, etc). I found that when I went to Canada from US - I got a better rate at an ATM than I would have gotten ordering Canadian currency at my US bank. Lower fees as well. Airports are typically not going to offer the best rate and will typically have higher fees - works in a pinch tho. |
