this person is a US resident. he is NOT a citizen. and first nations/native american indians.... they ARE american citizens.
you will need your passport. you need it to enter canada and to enter the US. you need your passport when you exit a country and enter a country... regardless of your status in that place.
your green card will only allow you to enter canada without a visa... but you still need your passport with you. you also need it if you want to get back into the US
