it's all relative...all provinces in Canada have a minimum wage law, unlike the US where some states don't have a min wage and we don't have the illegal immigrant problem driving down wages here...yes we have one of the highest standards of living in the world |

Yep, that's the nature of inflation.
Things get more expensive, so you get more pay to compensate, then there's more money out there so retailers/manufacturers charge more for goods thus getting more expensive, so in response you get more pay, etc, and on and on into forever.
The big reason why the Alberta boom really doesn't mean much. We might get more money, but things just cost more because of it. Everyone wants in on the "Alberta Advantage." |

I would not say the cost of living is that bad,We enjoy a very high standard of living.

I don't know. Even with exchange factored in I've still found things cheaper in the US but I don't think our cost of living is that much higher. In my job I make a little over 75% more then my American counterpart but I certainly don't have a 75% more expensive cost of living. For my cost of living I do get health care, more vacation and better benefits in my job so I guess it's a trade off. I wouldn't move to the US just for the lower cost of living though. I'd lose too many other perks. |

Job pay has nothing to do with cost of living. Please believe me. If an applicant, even a desperate one, feels that the offered pay could not provide him with his needs, he might accept it at first but will continue to apply elsewhere.
The actual driving point of higher job pay is the scarcity of applicants or rather qualified ones.
Once businesses that need qualified applicants to fill vacant slots that are needed immediately, do not have sufficient or even a single interested applicant, the salary scale immediately goes up. It is the law of demand and supply (not a law by the government but rather by economics). Should there be more interested applicants than the slots available, the salary offer may be less. |

That's one of the reasons the other is education. |

From a Canadian - yes they pay higher. average minimum wage varies from province but they are all about 12 - 13 dollars per hour. Last summer the CDN $ was higher than US - it fluctuates. But the pay is about 15% higher was due to lower dollar. I am a management consultant with just a BA and make around 80G CND. Canada has a lower dollar as it is an exporting country. Most jobs here are technical/financial etc (though we have a lot of manufacturing) I have lived in both countries and the standard of living is very equvialnt amongst the two. |

no, they probably pay more because the the canadian dollar is weaker. $1.20 canadian equals $1 US |
