Is Calgary a good place to holiday in? |
I am thinking about flying into Calgary for holidays. Then probably driving into mountains. Is this feasible idea? If so, where should I stay? Where should I go? Additional Details Thanks so far.
It is a summer holiday -either July or August that I am looking at.
When is the stampede on? |

There's lots to see and do in Calgary and the surrounding area. In Calgary there's the Calgary Tower, Calgary Zoo, Fort Calgary, Heritage Park, Glenbow Museum, Canada Olympic Park, Calaway Park (probably of no interest if you don't have kids). The Stampede is in July.
The surrounding area includes places like Kananaskis, Banff, and Lake Louise (all within a couple hours of Calgary). There's the Badlands and Royal Tyrell Museum at Drumheller. You could book a ride on a steam train out of Stettler. I believe the RCMP dog training centre near Innisfail (about 90 minutes north of Calgary) still offers tours of the facility (Wednesday afternoons at 2PM).
Depending on how far from Calgary you want to travel I think it's a great place to visit and to use as a base for visiting other places in Southern Alberta.
Check out the links below for more information, including an accommodation guide. |

Badger did a great job of listing things to do in Calgary and area! I saw the question this morning but didn't have time to answer.
Calgary can keep you busy for a long time. If you want to come during Stampede you'll have to book a hotel now because they book up quickly. May already be for all I know.
The areas around Calgary can also keep you busy for weeks. If you like hiking, there are a lot of wonderful places in the mountains - the scenery is awesome.
You can head from Banff to Jasper on the Icefield Parkway and go up on a glacier.

Stampede is July. Yes go to the Mountains, it's very feasible....go to Jasper and Banff areas. It's absolutely gorgeous and much to do. Many great places to stay...depends on your budget. Go to your local travel agent and they will be able to guide you in the right direction based on your personality of things you like/want to do. They are your absolute best resource! |

Calgary is a super place to go on Holiday, make a trip up to the Rocky's, hire a car, go and see an ice hockey game. I had a GREAT time out their and wish I could go back. Only if hiring a car stick to the speed limit, trust me on this one it's expensive if you don't! |

After seeing your question it got me to searching and after a quick search i can tell you yes but i noticed that a few really cool things take place a small drive away like the banff upper hot springs and and great white water rafting the Olympic museum and of course the Calgary stampede, check out this site www.tourismcalgary.com and see for yourself |

Definitely go to Lake Louise and the Badlands. The Stampede in the summer is a great cultural experience so don't miss that if you're there in the summer. If you're going now, there is still snow in the mountains and just driving to Banff would be worth it for the scenery. Enjoy! |

Definately! Calgary is at its peak in July!
The first full week is the Stampede. It's a lot of fun, however accomodations will be more expensive. But if you've never been here to see it, it's a great show!
Banff and Jasper are beautiful, but I think that they are overly touristy. And expensive! Get a car and drive to the Kananaskis. It's less developed and more pristine...very beautiful.
If you are up for a little drive, you can head out of Calgary, down the #2 highway to Nanton to check out the antiques shops, or even down to Fort Macleod to see Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump (A UNESCO heritage site...very cool!) Also, the LDS temple in Cardston is a provincial heritage site and very beautiful. The Crowsnest Pass is breathtaking and the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre is informative--and heartbreaking. But a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for sure!
Lodging outside the city is a little cheaper, but there are tons of hotels all over the city. There are also campgrounds, if that's your flavor.
It really depends on what you want to do and see while you're here, what your budget is, and how long you have. You can email me if you'd like for more information. |

Yes, Calgary would make a great holiday. As for where to stay, that depends on your budget. Stampede is usually early July, you have to book your hotel early cuz it's busy during that time. Definately drive out to Banff, Lake Louise as well! Have fun. |

Hi, dont stay in Calgary. Visit Calgary is ok but stay in the Banff Area, about 1 hr drive. There are several places to visit, may be ski in Sunshine Village or Lake Louise.
Have fun ! |

Why I love Alberta.
1.the weather is soooooooooooo unpredictable!
2. there are so many different climates and regions
Example:
There are plains, mountain, even a snippet of the Canadian shield.(far up north though, don't go there=cold!). don't stay in Calgary, go to Drumhellar(museum!) go to banff(banff springs hotel) lots of cool atractions, but not a super lot in calgary. exceot the calgary tower!. |
